Sept. 27, 2005 Trashing liberals is fun, especially from the bottom of a well. You can scream and shout all you want but the Americans aren't listening anymore. It seems the ideology of the right wing is blowing up in the face of America and we, the liberals who knew better a long time ago and are getting smarter now, are the ones that are finally speaking up for the population and pointing the finger and who deserves the blame. Are Democrats wrong in the Congress? Sure. They stand for pretty much themselves and a bold attempt to try and regain power rather than governing. But the Republicans, who are against government from what I understand, are in a majority that runs roughshod over the needs of the people they were elected to serve. They too are also more interested in maintaining power rather than bringing about the changes that are demanded of their party, at least the true Republicans. The sea change that is taking place in America is the grassroots movements of the voters who, realizing they were hijacked in the last election, will not stand for the right wing shenanigans. We, the true progressives, are working diligently to take the wool off of the eyes of the country that would rather give away tax cuts than feed the pre-hurricane poor among us. But what can you, the American, do to make sure that the religious and radical right do not steal democracy from the hands of the moderates? Well, how about getting off your lazy keister and getting involved with the campaigns. But, there is a catch. I am not asking for people to vote Democrat, since a hollow vote is a hollow vote. I want Americans to vote what is right. This next election we will see pandering that makes it look like the same people are so pro-family, so pro whatever the people take as American values that they cannot see through the masks and the fraud that they allow the war in Iraq to continue and the tax dollar being given to the likes of right wing contributors rather than a fair system. Look at New Orleans. Check out who is getting the rebuilding contracts. Right wing donors. That is not to say that they are not capable of doing the job. It is just that why is it only ones affiliated with one party? Americans, only through a show of strength, can right our government and bring back equality to this great nation. Most liberals have it figured out. We are just too busy licking our wounds. It will take the voice of the moderates, those that want to see a government that works together, in a non-partisan way, to speak up for what they believe in. ------------ About the author: Nicholas Olson is a long-time journalist who has been a columnist at his college newspaper and is currently a military journalist.
