 By Hal von Luebbert Sept. 27, 2005 Last night’s Fox - the O’Reilly Factor, I think – sank to a new low for “National Inquirer” reporting with the Joran Van Der Sloot “interview.” That it was, in fact, an ambush can’t be disputed, inasmuch as O’Reilly all but called it that, and with pride. Only Greta Van Susteren’s similar ambush of the Natalee Holloway classmates in an earlier segment rivals the O’Reilly piece for deliberately lurid, prurient-appealing and preponderant attempt at creating falsified reality. That it succeeded with some is evident from already one essay already posted here, that of Meri Ulrich. I will write to Meri, to ask where she had obtained her information, as I have a number of persons here on UK and elsewhere. If the others are any indication, I will get nothing but the hearsay being reported by the yellow journalists of the media. And opinion shaped by the yellow journalism. I suppose I have to say for the fourth of fifth time that I have no opinion concerning the guilt or innocence of anyone here. I couldn’t have. I have not a shred, not a scintilla of evidence. But I have a great deal of evidence where another crime is concerned, the kind of crime that has already resulted in the conviction of literally hundreds of men, more than a hundred of whom have been rescued by modern science. The latest bloviate from Fox and their pontiff, Bill O’Reilly, is an example of the truly deplorable state of our so-called new media. Is anyone here old enough to remember when the nation, its jurists and its journalists, deplored any detectable attempt to try a suspect in the media? I don’t suppose, but I remember the strident uproar certain of the press raised each time a police detective, attorney, or court deprived the media of the “dirt” they seemed to think they required for grist to be used in their developing rumor mill. Now this. With Greta Van Susteren and her ilk, we have blatantly open effort to solve cases, veritable – no, actual – third-degree questioning; everything you would expect of a police detective. Supposed prosecutors harangue the public in a manner one would expect from an officer of the court in a courtroom. Joran Van Der Sloot is being tried in the media. “Amendment V: “No person shall be held to answer for a capital or otherwise infamous crime, unless on the presentment or indictment of a grand jury (author’s note: we’re well past that nowadays, aren’t we?) . . .nor shall any person (please take note, Mr. O’Reilly) be compelled to be a witness against himself, nor deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law” (NOTE: that does NOT mean process of pillory in the media). Joran Van Der Sloot is not a citizen of the United States, thank God. I’ll bet he’s damned glad of that, and I imagine he’s not the only one. He has obviously been convicted by the media, as people like Meri here make clear. It will do no good to point out that all he might be convicted of is lying about something – what isn’t quite clear. In short, the nation that is undoubtedly the biggest liar in human history, possessed of a government that is premised, built, and maintained on falsehoods, has convicted the citizen of another country of rape (something it could not possible prove, under the circumstances) and murder, solely on the basis of his having lied. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE! NONE. Let us not forget – as my countrymen are all desperate to do – that in 1978, the government of the United States, tacitly supported by its public constituency, “deprived” Hal von Luebbert, “of life, liberty, and property, without due process of law,” and “seized” my “property without just compensation.” I did not “enjoy the right of a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury . . .,” either. Let us further not forget that in 1986, when I had recovered, the United States of America did it all again. I lost another wife, another business, and my son tried to kill himself, not once but three times. I was not given anything remotely resembling “due process.” Worse, the media – those champions of liberty and justice, stood by silently while all of it was done. That is despite press conferences and oceans of proof of my statements, proof that I sent by the box to Senators and Congressmen. When the federal goons attacked me, publicly and with obviously murderous intent (running a man down with a bus, then trying to run over him as he lies squirming on the street is pretty convincing evidence for anything intelligent), you, the public – you vehement apologists and staunch supporters of truth, justice, and the American Way – stood by idly and watched. Not a single witness - then or where any of dozens of similar skirmishes occurred - came forward. When the government instituted a campaign of threats to assure that I would not be able to gain employment, the public stood by, did nothing during literally hundred of instances. I KNOW YOU, “America.” I know you for the sickening hypocrites you are. I know you for what the Bill O’Reillys, Sean Hannitys and their kind are able to exploit with their yellow journalism and prurience-baited propagandist seduction. You are an incipient, “wannabe” lynch mob. I know the result.
