In These Times Of Wanton Ease For The Rich

By John L. Waters
Sept. 26, 2005

In these times of wanton ease for the rich, suddenly modern civilization is having a heart attack or at least a conniption fit.

How come? Well, the flow of Vital Spirit is being reduced to a trickle. The fire of engines is increasingly costly to maintain. What are folks gonna do with their millions and millions of gas-guzzling vehicles.

I refer, of course, to the rather sudden rise in cost of crude oil and all its derivatives, and the effect this will have on the cost of most other commercial goods.

The rising price of petroleum will soon be reflected in the rising cost of everything made from oil as well as everything that has to be transported to market.

Alas! The people who are living on low fixed incomes will suffer the most. Whooweee! That's a lot of brothers and sisters!

I for one dream of living in a greener and wider open space, away from the concrete and blacktop, in a place where people don't use much oil or gas at all. That is in a rural community where humans and their animals do most of the work.

This safer and saner way of life is liable to come to everyone sooner than later, whether they want it or not. It wasn't such an unhappy life for our ancestors. Why should we moderns be so afraid of it? Science and technology can go on without burning down the highway and burning up the Earth.

Think about it. One large house with a warm wood fire can keep dozens of people warm. Moreover, with forest trees around dropping dead branches, there is always plenty of firewood. The forest duff grows mushrooms aplenty, along with snails, slugs, and other delectables. In the open areas fruits and vegetables are grown. Everyone has work to do and no one is unemployed. No one is homeless. What's so bad about that?

Modern petroguzzling warmongering humanity is a flash of transient overconsumption, like a meteor burning up in its rapid descent to Earth. Furthermore, as Earth keeps on being consumed for personal gain, people keep using a major part of that mineral wealth to wage war. In waging war many constructions of past generations are being destroyed. Even oil wells are being set on fire and water wells are being bombed! Waging war is raging insanity! Meanwhile more and more less combative, less competitive persons live without jobs, without homes, and largely without hope. To survive, some even make or sell dope.

What do you think about all this? What are you doing about it? If you think my ideas are far-fetched, silly, or crazy, then start originating and promoting some ideas of your own. Start helping people to cope better and not be so destructive.
