Taylor Behl-For Whom The Bell Tolls

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
Sept. 25, 2005

The disappearance of Taylor Behl is spawning criminal charges and arrests of several sorts.

Ben Fawley, alias Skulz, the 38-yr-old man who has admitted having a sexual relationship with Taylor Behl, the missing 17-yr-old freshman student at VCU, has been arrested on 16 counts of possession of child pornography. Of interest is that his lawyer was present when he was arrested, as well as a local Richmond, VA, news camera crew.

The child-pornography charges stem from video evidence gathered during a search of Fawley's home last week, reliable sources say, when police confiscated seven computers. One source close to the investigation said the evidence depicts adults and children in sexually themed movies. Some photographs Fawley previously posted on the internet of a young girl in somewhat sexualized poses, pushing down the waist band of blue jeans, for example, were reported of Fawley’s own daughter. A skateboarder friend-of-a-friend of Taylor has been arrested on drug charges after a bloodhound followed a track from Taylor’s car to his residence and Richmond police found drugs.

Ben Fawley himself filed, at about the same time as Taylor’s disappearance, a police report that he had been abducted, assaulted, robbed, his head covered with a hood, and that he was then dumped out of a car on a dirt road, where a good Samaritan of unknown name picked him up and drove him home.

Fawley has had a fascination with skulls, fires, and young women. He affects a somewhat Goth persona.

With friends like these, who needs enemas?

The situation for Taylor Behl is looking more grim, unfortunately. And it seems, that even more clearly and overtly than in the Holloway and Popovich cases, she engaged in foolish, self-destructive, dangerous behaviors.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, there is little news on the Julie Popovich front. A friend of “Tanner” has written me, saying that it is spelled “Tannar,” which is strange, since prior e-mails from people claiming to be friends of “Tanner/Tannar” and of Julie have spelled it “Tanner.” The writer assures me that Tanner/Tannar is not a suspect and that he’s a wonderful fellow. The source of the busted-up hand has not been clarified. Some of Julie’s family is not entirely convinced.

And on the Aruban front, the Holloway case seems to be getting colder. I think that the time has passed, unfortunately, when there was enough attention on the case that an Aruban boycott could have been organized. Or, more specifically, a “girlcott.” Boys would probably be safe on Aruba. It is girls who are raped and who disappear. If my children were of age to be traveling to Aruba, I would be lobbying against it. Somebody on that island knows what happened to Natalee, and I wouldn’t be spending my tourist dollars there until they step forward and do the decent thing.

Then again, I wouldn’t let an underage daughter get tattoos, piercings, or other forms of body mutilation, nor would I condone excess alcohol. Being a parent is a tough and dirty job, but somebody has to do it.
