Sept. 24, 2005 Here we go again. Hurricane season for the last couple of years has been one battering after another. According to most weather forecasters we better get used to this because we are going to see more activity each hurricane season. Last year a record four hitting Florida and now two major hurricane's coming ashore within three weeks of each other and almost in the same locales. Let's not look at the hurricane, but the preparations made prior that affect how things get cleaned up afterward. I watched the news and saw the cars lined up for miles on one stretch of highway leading out of Galveston and Houston in dismay. Why did the state of Texas not make use of the roadways to move traffic out of harms way in one direction? Would this make too much sense? Why did the airports hold people up for hours on end trying to pass them all through the scanners? Why not scan them on the safe end? Why place so many people on oxygen on the same bus if ones knew that oxygen is soooo combustible? It appears that while we did learn some things from Katrina we did not anticipate nor plan for them all. It is not all that difficult to get all of your city planners, managers, and council people together to forge a workable and manageable disaster plan that takes into account the use of all means of transportation OUT of town for all people required to evacuate. That plans for places on the outskirts for FEMA and other disaster relief personnel to stage before going in for search and rescue efforts afterward. A place to hold water, food, and medical supplies for the evacuees. A place to contain or house those that will be assisting the law enforcement personnel to keep control if need be. A central place for insurance adjustors to collect before embarking on claims. A command post that has state of the art communication equipment that keeps all people moving in the same direction and working towards the same end result. Why can't they seem to get it right? I know that I'll be paying close attention to how this disaster unfolds and to how the people that were trusted with the safe keeping of their people take charge and rebuild. More than that, I want to know that all state, county, local, and federal authorities have a logical, comprehensive, and workable plan for all future disasters that might befall our nation!!! I want to know that they are capable planners and not the inept boobs they appear to be. (and this comment transcends all levels of government) I want them to have the ability to organize and implement an array of plans to suit any given disaster. I want them to possess the knowledge and ability to monitor and tweak these plans if need be and change them as times dictate. But please let's stop bungling things, pointing fingers at each other, and shirking responsibility. Let's start saving lives by making plans and fostering partnerships for a better and more prepared America!!!! ------------ About the author: Michelle Malsbury was born and raised in Champaign, Illinois.
