Sept. 24, 2005 Patrick Hurley, that prolific penman who pumps out a stream of paeans supporting Beth Holloway-Twitty, the media-maven-loving mother of Natalee Holloway, the beautiful missing-from-Aruba Alabama honours student who, according to various websites, was awarded an eight-year, full-ride scholarship for a four-year premedicine degree at the University of Alabama, seems sadly reduced in worldly possessions these days. His picture, displayed at http://bureau.espeakers.com/jost/viewspeaker4286, reveals a hairless, daughterless, leather-jacketless but nonetheless smiling gentleman standing in front of a curiously blank wall—a wall totally devoid of hairpiece; photograph of that oft-mentioned, cherished daughter; or hook upon which to hang that dearly beloved and well-travelled leather jacket. Blank, except for three nail heads, dimly discernable through the shadow cast by Mr. Hurley’s hip. Mr. Hurley makes modest mention, in the short bio accompanying his image, of three Emmy Awards awarded to him, presumably as back-to-back recognition of the three-year period that he spent toiling for ABC Television. Three Emmy Awards and three eerily unused nail heads. What is the story behind that sterile, empty wall? Did Pat, busily railing against corruption, incompetence and criminality in far-off Aruba, let down his dead bolts for a moment, thus offering some opportunistic sneak thief the few minutes needed to strike and pilfer those hard-earned Emmy Awards? I am only a passive consumer in the entertainment field and, not knowing the current value attributed on e-Bay to a matching set of three back-to-back Emmy Awards, I logged onto the website provided by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, http://www.emmys.tv/contact/index.php and braced myself for the results to be revealed by the search (America’s insurance providers have taken one hell of a hit recently through their exposure to the Katrina losses—and a claim for three stolen back-to-back Emmy Awards might just be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back). WTF? Pat Hurley…1949 to 2004…”No awards or nominations matching search criteria.” Patrick Hurley…1949 to 2004…“No awards or nominations matching search criteria.” Surely the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is not so remiss as to misplace any and all mention of the average one-time award winner? Has someone bought them off, paying mega-bucks to have the records of the two-time winners purged? Has the Netherlands Government taken offense at the libels directed at Paulus Van Der Sloot and purchased the Academy outright, just to render invisible Pat’s hard-won accomplishments and his three back-to-back Emmy Awards? Or, horror, are those Emmys, too, a figment of Pat’s fevered imagination? As factual and farcical as his regular pronouncements about the proven criminal guilt and involvement of the Aruban judicial system and police force, the entire Van Der Sloot family, and the Kalpoe brothers in the Holloway missing-person case? Could be, could be. Empty nail heads seldom lie.
