Some Skeptics Run Away

By John L. Waters
Sept. 23, 2005

Some skeptics run away. For example, apparently the famous skeptic James Randi ran away when Rico Kolodzey offered to show Randy evidence that he lived on prana and water. Apparently James Randi responded by saying,

"Are you actually claiming that you have not consumed any food products except water, since the end of 1998? If this is what you are saying, did you think for one moment that we would believe it?"

With his foot in his mouth, Randi continues,

"If this is actually your claim, you're a liar and a fraud. We are not interested in pursuing this further, nor will we exchange correspondence with you on the matter."

Read the actual letter signed by James Randi. (I am assuming that this website is not fraudulent.)

I've just been visiting with several psychology professors at Humboldt State University, in an effort to get some preliminary testing done so that I know what to claim for James Randi or some other skeptical inquirer "debunker." I need to know how the "yogic force" I sense and transmit affects various bodily functions as these register on medical equipment. So far, however, no HSU professor has offered to help me. To conservative professors the project sounds pretty "far out." One young teacher used the term "cutting edge." He said that graduate students tend to avoid "cutting edge" projects.

I wrote Skeptical Inquirer in 1981 I think it was, and on a postcard Kendrick Frazier merely wrote back "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proofs." With all their financial backing, they made no offer to help test my claim. It's 24 years later.

Until some ANGEL of a psychology professor or medical doctor, or financier comes forward, and helps me out on this, I will remain stuck in my socio-financial reality, and since I lack professional credentials one professor pointed out yesterday that I don't have a snowball's chance in hell. His words were less graphic. However, folks have been telling me such things for decades. But I'm not the one to run away.

What IS prana, really? Well, I've read that prana is "breath." Obviously, prana is NOT just breath, because billions of people breathe air, but they have to eat to survive! If someone is living without eating, and they say they are "living on prana," then this is very confusing and one wants to understand what is really going on. Maybe instead of "prana" or breath, IT is "yogic force." That's what Swami Rudrananda called IT. Or maybe it is the fabulous "kundalini" also known as "serpent power."

Well, in India both Hira Ratan Manek and Sunyogi Umasankar have been promoting their own use of sunlight to remain alive without eating much (or any) food. Professional medical doctors have tested these men and many news articles have been written about Hira Manek. HRM has been on a long lecture tour for at least two years. Umasankar and Manek don't agree 100% on what is the best method of "living on light," but apparently in India some doctors are interested. Why aren't medical scientists in the USA seriously interested, and why wasn't James Randi interested in Mr. Kolodzey's claim to live on prana?

What's going on here?

You tell me.

Why does James Randi just dismiss people who are doing something mysterious, like living on "yogic energy" without really investigating their earnest claims?

Might this be a deceptive feint that one might expect from a former professional magician?

Quote:
"He [Jani who claims to have lived for decades without eating food]underwent all possible medical investigations — from checking blood pressure to MRI of brain and gut, which were normal. Perhaps, he is more fit than other people of his age. This is an attempt to understand a new dimension in medical science and help mankind," said Dr Sudhir Shah, a neurologist, who was a part of the team who examined a similar case of Hira Ratan Manek, a person who fasted for 411 days."

The list does not exist to proselytize or promote sungazing, but rather to share information for those who already sungaze. The purpose of this group is to offer support and advice to folks who have chosen to sungaze, and for sungazers to share experiences.
