Don't Forget The War

By Stan Grimes
Sept. 23, 2005

Hurricanes Rita and Katrina have taken the spotlight, rightly so, from the war drudging on in Iraq. We see only occasional flashes of the daily car bombings and bloodletting that continues there. We here taxpayers complaining about the amount of money being poured into the Gulf Coast states and we are sure to hear more complaints with Hurricane Rita. Please be assured that there is “much” more money being filtered to another part of the world.

Let us not forget about the billions of dollars still being invested in an un-winnable war. The sigh of relief from the White House can be heard even in the isolated small towns in Indiana. I heard a sigh last night, in fact. I thought it was the wind, but I’m certain it had a Texan twang to it. The sigh results from the welcomed relief of “no press coverage” of the war. The war is still there and people are still losing their lives.

“Old news,” you say? No, unwanted news. Our friends on the Republican side of town continue to wear their blinders. They don’t want to hear about the failed military effort being made across the ocean. Billions upon billions of our hard-earned taxes are being funneled to the Middle East. We continue to borrow trillions of dollars from China, Japan, and other countries to fund this debauchery. What once was a balanced budget in this country has come un-glued and out of control.

The President’s popularity is waning daily and has hit an all-time low. The once strong support from his Republican constituents is shifting in the sand. What has happened? The conservative fiscal policy of giving to the rich, rich, rich is beginning to rear its ugly head. Our middle class has suffered more than ever in the past five years and our poor are still waiting for a bus out of town. Like New Orleans, the bus never shows up.

Race? No one wants to hear about the issue. Of course, the folks left behind in New Orleans were mostly Blacks. Why? There is a disproportionate amount of poor people, who just happen to be Black in this country. Close your eyes and pretend that it’s not true. By doing so, when you open your eyes it will still be true. What do Christians quote, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set ye free?” Truth is ugly and glaring sometimes, but it’s like an ugly dog that remains ugly no matter how long you look at it.
