And The Survey Says...

By Judy Ramsook
Sept. 18, 2005

Surveys come and go, but there are some results that will leave some wondering, huh? According to a wide federal study of the country’s sexual practices, it has been found that a little more than half of US teens, ranging in the 15 to 19 age groups have participated in oral sex. In this category, males and females have been known to acquire the similar level of experience.

Furthermore, the National Centre for Health Statistics which released the results of their findings last Thursday also states that amount increases to approximately 70 percent of 18 and 19 year olds. What can be more thought provoking is that the same survey taken nine months ago by the same centre also showed that more girls than boys were having intercourse before reaching the age of 20.

And to add more to this startling statistic, according to other nationwide data, the number of girls who have one time sexual encounters or one night stands and relationships with no romantic attachments, equal that of boys. What can parents and guardians do to prevent such statistics from becoming even more startling?

This part does not involve anything remotely related to higher science. It’s basic communication. Talk to kids whenever possible about exercising more control and sexual responsibility. And if the teens are too embarrassed to discuss such an issue with a parent, still keep trying because the types sexual activities mentioned in the above paragraphs can have a profound impact on the teen’s life.

And although it can be challenging at times, try and keep that line of communication open. With so many STDs out there, not to mention emotional setbacks, you can never be too cautious, and some day that teen will be grateful that you had that talk. For every conversation you have with your teen about this matter is worth the time.
