Sept. 18, 2005 Religion is such and empty and meaningless endeavor, it seems every day we are presented with another example of the stupidity of true believers. When it's not Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson doing or saying something outrageous, it's a Holy Joe Schmoe from some small town making himself an idiot in the name of God. Some clerics try to figure out how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, others attempt to see how many children they can prick with a pin. A priest in Austin, Texas pricked 15 children with an unsterilized needle during Mass to demonstrate the pain Jesus Christ suffered during his crucifixion. "What I was trying to teach them is that suffering is a part of life," proclaimed the Rev. Arthur Michalka. Many Christians make a fetish out of pain and suffering, there is nothing inherently noble or spiritually enriching about suffering. Yeah, suffering is a part of life, but it's not something we should exalt. When I'm suffering I don't say, "Thank you Jesus for this trial", I merely mumble to myself: Sh** Happens! Michalka said he plans to apologize in church for not sterilizing the pin. How about apologizing for abusing innocent children to illustrate a point? Michalka sounds like a Nazi prison guard apologizing for not saying a prayer when he turned on the gas ovens.
