Sept. 17, 2005 So I spent my time today visiting the shelter for the people that Katrina sent to us from Louisiana. I live in the good ole upstate, Greenville, South Carolina where many in need now reside. The place is called Palmetto, Expo Center, and the folks we are helping start a new are in a facility about the size of a football field. They sleep on blow up beds and cots. The showers are outside in trucks. The media are sleeping in tents outside the facility. Let me rephrase this. The media come here after spending the night either in a plush hotel or there homes if they are local. There are about thirty Red Cross Volunteers there seeing that the people get what they need, food, soap and even games to pass the time away. The good thing I saw was the fact that most of the folks were out looking to make a better life for them looking for jobs and Positive outlooks are on the rise. Most of the handful I talked to were upbeat and hopeful. They all agreed to return home one day and rebuild. I told a few jokes making light if the subject but they at the least were smiling. As I drove away I pondered what I have just witnessed there. I have a home to go to and most of these people do not. They have to live here sleeping on rubber blow ups and cots. They are making the best of a really bad circumstance. I applaud them and salute them all. I handed out a printed, autographed copy of my book “Growing up Goomba” and they all seemed grateful. They all thank the world for coming together on this and I told them the world does not expect any thanks and they were just glad to help.
