Bear Creek

By John L. Waters
Sept. 17, 2005

I'm sitting here at Bear Creek, right near its clear stream, in a dear spot of the world to deer and their predators which are mountain lions and trigger-happy digital camera buffs. I'm glad to be neither of these. I'm just a writer.

I chuckle as the sound of laughing waters is in my ears now and I know that the waters aren't really laughing but in Hiawatha the poet Longfellow didn't take all that debunking cynicism seriously. That man really was a poet. Longfellow cared about onomatapoea, meter, and rhythm and all the rest.

Now hey. I know I'm not doing justice to this very special place writing such prose as this. Even so, I continue to write because Bear Creek is a natural place and the water is always talking to me. I feel like talking back!

Bear Creek is an all-weather creek, and the rocks remain here all year where water gurgles through and sounds a monotonous monologue for all ears to hear. There are in fact many people moving along the trail within fifty feet of where I am now, but to really appreciate the sounds of this creek you have to just sit down or lie down on the soft ground and meditate. People walking by on the trail usually don't do this. So I will do it and write you what came up.

And now as I remain in meditation let's pause for station identification.

This is how we let THAT which is divine in us make contact with us so that we feel IT without reservation.

Now please. Be patient with me for awhile while I say nothing. Take a break from your reading.

Ten minutes have passed and it's a bit chilly here in the shade. I think I'll walk to Palm Point. That exercise will warm me up a bit.

All the while, hour after hour, day after day, week after week, and century after century, Bear Creek continues to speak without hesitation. So why shouldn't I?
