In regards to the article you wrote about breaking your child's habit of whining ... is 7 months to early to start?? She is starting to whine all the time. I put her in her car seat and she whines and kicks herself out of it ... just one example.

Good question, Pam. The problem, in this case, stems back to communication. You’re having a communication break down with your baby. Can your daughter use American Sign Language? They are able to use simple signs as early as six-months-old. If you teach her to tell you what she wants with her hands, then you won’t have to hear the protests.

Perhaps she wants a drink of water and cannot verbalize that. Maybe her seat belt is too tight. What if she just wants you to hand her a toy to play with on the ride? If you teach her the signs for water, hurt and play, this could easily be resolved.

When I first heard about signing with children I worried that it could be too much of an investment of my time. That’s just not the case though. It’s easy and extremely rewarding. So to answer your question more directly, seven months is not too early to start teaching a child a good habit. You just have to know how to go about doing it. If you have the right tools, anything is possible!
