Sept. 15, 2005 When Elvis shook his hips from side to side on stage some five decades ago, some people were appalled. So appalled that when he performed on a televised stage after that first hip shaking scene, the audience at home saw his dance movements from the waist up. Nowadays it is quite rare when viewers can capture a celebrity dance move without such shaking of the pelvic area. With such a move being prominent in such performers like Shakira, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and others when they do dance routines in their music videos and such, one might indeed wonder about how far society has come since those Elvis days. For those moves are not being censored, Elvis style. In fact, it’s some of those hip shaking moves that might keep some members of the viewing audience glued to the television. And it does not end with the viewing either. Some people who want to perfect those moves go through great pains in loosening up their bodies long enough to accommodate one of those hip gyrations. For, yes, in order for those hips to gyrate smoothly, one has to practise loosening up that part of the body, especially if you are not accustomed to making those types of moves on the dance floor. If you are accustomed to making that move, then it will come rather easily. And although people had been shaking their hips before Elvis took it to the stage, it might make some people in our midst today wonder, what was all the fuss about when he did that move. Because today, that seems to be a prominent dance move that is not going to disappear from view anytime soon. And if Elvis were still around, he might feel good knowing that this dance move is not being censored in today’s society, at least not like the way it was when he did it. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
