Sept. 14, 2005 If there is a leak in your roof, you will try and repair it before the next batch of rain fall, right? Thus saving you the trouble of having to cope with a wet floor, damaged carpet and restless night of sleep, especially if it’s raining at night and you have to keep checking that pail you placed under the leak to catch drops of rain water. And if you have repaired the leak in the roof, you have prevented at least one undesireable event from taking place. In light of the destructive forces of hurricane Katrina, maybe it was the wake up call for those concerned. Hurricanes come and go every year And although this cannot be stressed upon often enough, instead of waiting for something of a destructive nature to take place, a good thing to do during the non hurricane season is to reinforce those levees or dams that these potential storms are most likely to strike. And in order for this to be done, money is needed. Because if certain cities that are near hurricane striking areas are to strengthen those dams, they need to hire people and purchase the materials needed for the job. If some places don’t have additional funds for such a project, and federal aid is unavailable, find a way. Hold a fundraiser or something of that nature. For no one wants to be misplaced, displaced or lose loved ones who could not afford adequate shelter from a hostile storm. They just want to wake up the day after the hurricane and try to move on with their lives. And if these same people know that reinforcing that dam will keep them on the path of stability, and their precious homes from being damaged beyond repair, they might even want to join in on the project.
