Sept. 13, 2005 My Great Great Granny lived on a Cherokee Reservation in Oklahoma. Her people were displaced from their homes via the Trail of Tears. She left the reservation and went to work as maid in Kentucky. She married an English Butler. That was the beginning of the Miller Clan in Kentucky. My beloved Great-Granny always told me that you have to bloom where you are planted. This brings me to the story of the Jackson Clan of New Orleans. Technically they are not all Jacksons but are related to the family spokesman Oscar Jackson. You've got to love this family. They were fortunate in the fact that they had vehicles including a commandeered Church Van to evacuate New Orleans to get away from Hurricane Katrina. The family landed in Seguin, Texas because the Best Western motel, a 20-hour drive from New Orleans, was the first with available rooms. These are working class folks, a window washer, a cook at Pat O'Brien's, a food service delivery driver, a courier, a cashier at a gourmet grocery store, a security guard, a bank teller, and a construction worker. Oscar Jackson is a car salesman. His sister, Paula, is a licensed nurse practitioner. This is a family with talents that will be a blessing in any community. There are 24 of them and more heading their way. Oscar's mother applied for a job as a maid at the Best Western Motel where she was staying. Several members of the family are now employed. They opted for new homes close to each other so that they can car-pool to their jobs. The blessings were many, but so is the culture shock, . Where were the city buses that they had relied on to get around in New Orleans? Where were all the black folks? People sitting on porches listening to gossip and Cajun Music. Oscar's sister-in-law was worried about breaking into a new town. Her son had told, "Mama, you gotta sell yourself like you are on a job interview." There has been much kindness toward this family by the townspeople. My fine tuned intuition tells me that Seguin, Texas will be equally blessed by the presence of this family. This is the town with the world's biggest Pecan. Perhaps pecans can be incorporated into Cajun Cooking. Oscar Jackson purchased a cowboy hat for what he thought would be a three visit. Now that hat is permanent part of his attire as he announces, ""The Jackson family is here to stay," he announced, flashing his broad smile. "These are my new neighbors." He is going what my granny taught me, Bloom where planted. "We are gonna put a new star on the map," he said. Indeed, Oscar Jackson and his lovaable family are the newest bright stars in Texas ------------ About the author: Bonijean Isaacs is a freelance writer and Astrologer in West Virginia.
