Sept. 11, 2005 In some cultures in the world, if a female is walking down a street and is heckled by a male subject, she, the female is viewed as being a ‘bad girl’ if she turns around to pay attention to the heckler. Providing of course that the heckler is a complete stranger to her at the time. But what happens when some one who is in need of an on the job promotion thinks a little flirtatious action with her boss or supervisor will land her that higher paying position. The results might astound you. According to a study conducted by Tulane University, women who tend to flirt on the job wear short skirts, send enticing email messages and even go so far as to massage men’s shoulders to get few pay raises as opposed to the female employees who do not engage in such behaviour. Furthermore, researchers questioned about 165 women who ranged in ages between their mid twenties to sixty. These women hold a Master’s degree in Business Administration and were asked to answer ten statements. Including queries about whether or not they had worn anything revealing in the presence of male clients or supervisors, crossed their legs provocatively in the company of male employees or even gave a man at work the impression that they were attracted to him, when they were not. Forty nine percent of the women questioned admitted that they had engaged in at least one of the ten sexual behaviours in order to advance their careers, while the other part of the participants in the study said that they had not engaged in any of those types of behaviour or actions. Those who said they had not used their sexual prowess on the job, ended up earning $75,000 to $100,000. As for the women who used their sexuality to advance themselves? They came in at the lower $50,000 to $75,000 range. On a personal note, achieving what you want on your own merit is better than taking what may seen like the easy way into a higher plane in life. It might take a longer time than you anticipated, with some frustrating trials along the way, but thnik about all the respect you would have earned otherwise.
