Sept. 10, 2005 Today is the fourth anniversary of September, 11, 2001 -- a day that will live in infamy. The images of passenger planes crashing into the World Trade Center will forever be etched in our minds. Some things are so horrible they can never be erased from our memories. But have we forgotten that in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, America was united as never before? For a few months we lost the hyphens, we were no longer African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Gay-Americans, Straight Americans and White-Americans -- we were simply Americans. We came together to render assistance, prayers and support to the victims of 9/11. The cataclysmic explosions of 9/11 did not blow us apart, instead they brought us together in a spirit of resolve, determination, and cooperation. President George W. Bush has urged national unity following the Hurricane Katrina disaster and invoked our response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. "Today, America is confronting another disaster that has caused destruction and loss of life. This time the devastation resulted not from the malice of evil men, but from the fury of water and wind," he said. In response to this natural catastrophe, we must come together to render assistance to the victims. Most of the evacuees in shelters in Texas and elsewhere are African American, the whole world is watching to see if we are really a democratic nation that cares about its poor and disenfranchised. Local, state and federal authorities were slow to respond to the disaster unfolding in the Gulf Coast. The government must make amends and spare no expense to show that the initial slow response was due to ineptitude and not to racism. The American people must open their homes, wallets and hearts to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, to prove that we are all brothers and sisters, who come to each others aid in a time of need. We survived 9/11 with all of our institutions, beliefs and goodness intact, it would be a shame if we let the ravages of Mother Nature tear us apart. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes has written over 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
