To Be Questioned Or Not

By Judy Ramsook
Sept. 8, 2005

If your parents cared about you enough when you were growing up to question you about your whereabouts, some aspects of that little interrogation probably annoyed you. Like say you told them where you had been and your parents still acted as if they did not believe you.

Say, for example, you told them you were at the ice cream shop and your parents asked you things like what flavour of ice cream did you have, and also if you had a cone or cup. At which point during the questioning process you say to yourself, that you wish they would just stop with all the questions. But think about it, what if the people whom you thought cared so much about you, did not ask anything about your life, would you really feel loved then?

Days come and go and everyday as you go about your life, going wherever you please with whomever you want, and not one member of your family asks you anything. For that requires a little time and concern.

Enough concern to ask that question you have not heard in a while. Where were you? So you sigh and go to your room for yet one more night secretly wondering, how come they don’t ask you anything, or try to make conversation with you, don’t they care?

The thing is, they, your parents or guardians might care, just remember that communication is a two way road. If you think your loved ones are too preoccupied to talk to you, try talking to them instead. It might surprise you to learn that they may just want to talk to you as well and may have also thought that you were too busy to have a conversation or two with them.

Not everyone is born knowing how to read some one’s thoughts, so if you have something to say to some one, put aside your shyness and pride and start communicating. Show some one that you care, make him/her wonder what took you so long to strike up a conversation, the outcome might surprise you.

As for the interrogating types? Enjoy that as well, for in order to ask questions, first the persons doing the asking need to spend some time to think about what to ask. And if they spent all that time thinking up all those questions, then you know for sure that they do care. And knowing that there’s some one in the world who cares about you can make all the difference between having a good day and a not so good one.
