Reality Show For Writers, Just An Idea

By Judy Ramsook
Sept. 7, 2005

With so many Reality television shows out there, there seems to be at least one to suit everyone’s liking. And there’s something for everyone, providing that you enjoy those types of shows, that is. There are shows ranging from Survivor and Fear Factor to American Idol, Rockstar Inxs and the like. But here’s an idea, how about one for writers.

You start out with a big name publisher that gathers a group of let’s say ten writers, so the show will eventually stretch out into ten or eleven one hour long episodes. The show could be longer depending on how many contenders you would like. Each writer must have at least one completed manuscript, so that the winner of the contest will ultimately be rewarded with a contract by the big name publisher. The completed manuscript can be comprised of any type of work, be it an anthology of poetry, work of fiction, or non fiction. And the judges for the show should consist of well known or famous authors, let’s say a panel of five of them.

Each week every one of the writers will be asked to read aloud to a televised as well as live audience (at the time of the show’s taping) something he/she has been working on, be it a poem, short story, or non fiction essay. So for this to be done in a timely manner, each written work should be of reasonable length. Like maybe for the poet, a poem could be two or three verses, for the non fiction or fiction writer, his/her essay or story could be two 8 by 11 pages long.

And of course there comes at the end of each episode the elimination process. This will be decided by the panel of judges who will rate or evaluate each of the writers’ works based on their message, wording, easy flow of ideas or thoughts, and use of proper grammar and punctuation such as periods, commas and such, with the judges paying close attention for those types of errors or lack there of.

Ultimately, and at the show’s final episode with two writers left standing, a winner will have to be chosen. But here’s the twist. In this last episode, it might not only be up to the judges’ final say. For on this, the last episode, all throughout the show, members of the televised audience will be allowed to call in with their votes. So even if the judges have agreed upon one of the two remaining writers as the clear winner, the majority of the votes from callers will determine the final outcome. In so doing, the winner could turn out to be the writer the voters from the viewing audience have chosen, and not the one the judges have agreed upon.

Just an idea.
