Gilligan, Bob Denver Died

By Bob D. Caterino
Sept. 7, 2005

GILLIGAN, Willy Gilligan died today. Actor Bob Denver best known for his roll as "Gilligan" on that lame show we all hated but loved to watch for some god forsaken reason is dead at the age of seventy.

"Gilligan's Island" debuted in 1964, but Denver had a long run with many other television shows. He played the lovable bongo beating beatnik Maynard G. Krebs on "the many loves of Dobie Gillis." He also stared with Chuck McCann in the children's show "Far out Space Nuts."

It became a love affair that endured throughout the life of Denver, who died Friday at age 70 of complications related to the cancer treatment he was undergoing at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina. He was in good spirits up till the end. I would visit frequently during my stay in Raleigh.

I'll miss ya, ole friend and now, you're with the skipper once again.
