All That's Happening

By John L. Waters
Sept. 6, 2005

A great deal of all that's happening right now is beyond our comprehension. Too much is going on for us to be aware of it all. Piece by piece and detail by detail, the whole is beyond our comprehension.

The best a person can do is pay attention to all that is near at hand. Even this is impossible during sleep, during focused work or study, and during conversation. The external environment is vast. In addition there is the vast inner environment, the trillions of cells of the body, and all their molecular components and their inter-relations on many levels.

The total person and the total world are unknowable in detail. Total comprhenension is made even less likely by the training of children to always be conscious and attentive to a certain person, subject, book, activity, or lesson. A great many subjects are never even noticed at all.

The Internet enables a person to remain seated for hours on end, just key-tapping and mouse-clicking away, bringing up page after page of material. Many subjects are presented on the Internet! Most persons, however, do not have a web presence, and any person who strives to get to know real living persons won't have much time to explore cyberspace. There's a lot more to a person than what they project out into cyberspace.

The need to explore grabs a curious person like a water snake grabs a frog and eats it whole. The curiosity-consumed person is often away from the conversation, the tea room, and the Internet cafe. Indeed, curiosity makes a curious person as incomprehensible as existence. In due time, however, even the most adventuresome and curious youth has to settle down to one special focus, sit still in a chair, and pay attention to the teacher, the book, and the lesson. Years later each recognized expert is contained in a socioeconomic box and workstation like a monk is confined in a cell where he/she can't get out and explore far and wide.

A curious person might want to know what it's like to be free. In exploring freedom one combines different expressions, perceptions, times, and places and goes visiting different persons without hesitation or fear. Art, music, dancing, and wordiness combine to produce a mix of free expressions. This free behavior might not impress a devoted specialist in any field. Young children will be delighted, however, because the adult explorer is so very much like a little child.

Language itself is different for different persons. For example, the factualist wants you to use words to present "the truth and nothing but the truth so help you God." This person puts you on trial. The artist, however, might let you paint in words like a trellis lets vines intertwine and blossom to fill the air with sweet fragrances. The artist might let you be free. In either case, though, you are expected to keep your target audience in mind, and not shoot arrows or looks that aren't aimed to hit that one small target. If you send off some wild shots, people may say that you are untrained, undisciplined, careless, inattentive, or even crazy.

Young children may show this free and wild side, and a free adult can elicit what's free in young children so that adults can study it. This study helps humanity express and understand more than any civilization has ever expressed and understood. More becomes knowable and doable. So hey. Let freedom ring.
