Hurricane Katrina: God Is Not In The Equation

By Robert Paul Reyes
Sept. 6, 2005

A hurricane is a natural phenomenon, the severity of a hurricane season varies with cycles of natural changes in temperature over the Atlantic over long stretches of time.

A hurricane may be defined as an "act of God" for insurance purposes, but The Almighty does not enter into the equation.

It requires a meteorologist to explain the intricacies and path that a monster storm takes.

A theologian is out of his element when he explains a weather phenomenon as God exacting His wrath on a sinful population. The likes of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson should stick to investigating how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, and leave meteorology to the professionals.

A hurricane unleashes tremendous power totally out of our control, but that doesn't mean we must place the blame on God, or by the same token, beg Him for assistance.

A killer storm is a dervish we can't harness, contain or control, but when it eventually dissipates, we have the capacity to repair the damage -- if we work together.

We can and we will rebuild New Orleans; we can and we will shelter, feed and heal the victims; we can and we will erase the ravages of Katrina from the Gulf Coast.

A hurricane may be an explosive force that exacts misery and devastation, but human beings working together for the common good, are the greatest force in the world.
