Sept. 3, 2005 As we watch the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina's fury unfold on our TV sets we can only imagine the depth of pain and suffering which multitudes are enduring. As I witness thousands living in unimaginable filth and squalor in shelters in New Orleans, I ask myself, "What can I do to help my fellow citizens, in their time of desperate need?" Some religious leaders have responded to this Apocalyptic horror by calling for a "Day of Prayer." If there is a "personal God", He is either benignly disinterested in human suffering or He is displaying His sovereignty by destroying a good portion of the Gulf Coast. In any event, it is the height of absurdity to pray for help to the same Supreme Being that allowed/caused this catastrophe in the first place. We don't need a "Day of Prayer", we need a "Day of Giving,", a "Day of Action." While the devout are praying to their capricious deity, the intelligent are rolling up their sleeves and lending a helping hand. A "Day of Prayer" encourages complacency, "I can't do much, but I have prayed for the victims of Hurricane Katrina." A "Day of Giving and Action" encourages Americans to do something real for the very real victims of this tragedy. Save your prayers, and send your money to the Red Cross. Save your pleas to your Heavenly Father, and respond by action, not words, to the pleas of your earthly brothers and sisters in need. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger and has written over 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
