Watching The News Coverage Of Hurricane Katrina

By Mike Romer
Sept. 2, 2005

I have been watching the news coverage of hurricane Katrina on most of the cable and local news outlets. What I have witnessed is making me sick to my heart.

As relief people are attempting to rescue the poor people who suffered the dire effects of the storm, they are coming under gun fire. This, in my opinion is totally and completely unacceptable under any circumstances.

What the Governors of both Mississippi and Louisiana must do is declare a martial law in the affected areas, activate the National Guards of both states and announce that any gun fire aimed at rescue personnel will be returned ten-fold, no matter what the color or financial situation of the shooters.. This type of action must not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Now to the looters. I can see the need to take food and water, and infant supplies for emergency survival, but the looters must be made to pay the business owners for items taken, as they had to purchase the goods that were stolen. As far as looters taking television sets, stereos, and other electronic equipment, these looters should be held and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the laws. There is no excuse to steal a television under any circumstances. That is nothing more than greed and thievery acted out by the lowest form of life.

These thieves know that those business owners provided jobs and incomes to the local population, plus the added service of providing goods and money for such emergency situations as this. The thieves literally and figuratively kicked the very people that helped them, some gratitude, huh?

Now little Bobby Kennedy is getting into the act. He’s blaming the Governor of Mississippi for the hurricane, claims it’s because he urged President Bush to not sign the Koyoto treaty, hence, the storm is President Bush’s fault as well. Now this I would have expected from Bobby’s fat uncle, but I held hope that at least one of the Kennedy family somehow obtained some common sense. I guess I was wrong.

Now, I have a lot of questions about this storm damage, one being; where is the great United Nations in all of this?

If someone passes gas in an African nation, the UN is there throwing tons of money at them, but I guess the USA has to fend for herself on this one.

I can’t wait to hear what the fat slob…..er Senator from Massachusetts has to say about this. I’m sure he will someway find a way to blame this storm on the Republican party. That is if he sobers up enough to know what’s happening in the nation.

Now, on to the gasoline situation that is being caused by this storm. The price of a gallon of gas is well over $3.00 in most places. My question is; When did the oil companies purchase this gas? Yesterday? The day of the storm? The day the pipeline filed to function? NO, this gas/oil product were most likely purchased at least 3 to 6 months ago. I think it is time for Congress and the President to inform the oil companies that there are laws against price gouging, and this is what we are having done to us. It’s time for the American people to say enough is enough!

I wonder how long it will take for the phony Reverends Jackson and Sharpton to get to New Orleans and how much trouble they are going to try to stir up? Is Jesse Jackson going to part with some of his shakedown proceeds? I’m sure Sharpton is going to find racism in this situation in someway, that is if he’s finished exploiting Cindy Sheehan’s grief.

I must say, I’m very proud of the residents of Texas for their out pouring of aid and welcoming the victims into their state and sharing their food and other items.
