Sept. 1, 2005 We are pouring billions of dollars into Iraq for a war that cannot be won now or ever. It is a war with little to be gained and much to be lost. If we ended the war tomorrow, those billions of dollars could be spent in trying to rebuild three states that have lost much more than will ever be gained from Iraq. Maybe we want to close our eyes to the fact that we are throwing billions of dollars into a thankless war. It is so much easier to say, “You want the war over because you’re anti-American or unpatriotic.” The truth, those who want the war over, want it over because it is un-winnable and it is an exercise in futility. Un-American? I don’t think so. How many liberals have died in New Orleans, how many conservatives? How many are lying in their own feces in darkened hospital rooms in New Orleans? How many are in the streets looting or just trying to survive? How many are corpses floating down Canal Street? Devastation has no party affiliation, war does. Viewers should be biting their lips each time they hear broadcasters announcing phone numbers that can be called to donate money for help in the crisis zone. Why? If we were not at war, there would be plenty of money easily channeled to the war zone currently taking place in three of our states in America.
What’s the real reason Federal and State help is slow in coming to disaster in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana? Could it be that our military resources have been stretched like a rubber band across the globe? Could it be that our priorities are just slightly off-kilter? If I may quote a biblical cliché, “pride cometh before the fall.” Swallow your pride President Bush. End the war and start rebuilding America.
