Sept. 1, 2005 I have never been to the crescent city, so I have no memories of the city or nostalgia for it. But it is one of Americas greatest cities. New Orleans was built on a bad site, but then so are a lot of cities. Think San Francisco for example. It might be easier to send the people of New Orleans elsewhere and forget about the city. Easier but not right. It's true we will be rebuilding the city for years, and it will be months before anyone can even return. But it needs to be rebuilt. It's all about symbols. Rebuilding a city says to the world that we are not giving up. Cities have been wiped out before. San Francisco in an Earthquake, and of course Hiroshima and Nagasaki in atomic bombs. They rebuilt, New Orleans will be as well. This is the USA and when we are hit with a disaster we rebuild, and we do it without a penny from anyone else. It will take time, and some of the people might choose to start their lives over somewhere else rather than wait to go back. But is New Orleans going to vanish? No more than New York was going to vanish after 9-11. The city is too important to vanish. It is the main port along the gulf, that alone will cause the city to rebound, this time even stronger. Mother Nature won this one, like she wins all of the others. But that doesn't mean we give up whenever she gives us a beating. ------------ About the author: Craig Chamberlain has written more than 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
