Necessities To Sustain Life: Air, Water, Food, And The Media

By Ken Hughes
Oct. 30, 2005

Like it or not we’re reliant on the media to sustain life on earth, that’s a sobering thought isn’t it? The media is our line of communication with the world. They inform us of all that’s happening in the world. How we interpret, it is up to each individual. Many of us absorb the news then immediately dismiss those things we consider biased of half-truths. Others buy every word as if it were fact.

A century ago, each Metropolitan area had several newspapers competing for the number one position. They came out with special additions when something of great interest happened. Other wise the public got yesterdays news today. In this electronic age, all too frequently we’re getting tomorrow’s breaking news today, it’s called speculative reporting. This has consequence, not for the media they have near total immunity. It has consequences for the people they attack.

The most recent case, the purported CIA leaks. They first became known when Ambassador Wilson [V. Plame’s Husband] was going around to various talk shows hawking his book. He’d been passed over for a cabinet position in the New Bush Administration, he then began playing payback. It took a year for the stories of Ms. Plame’s outing to gain legs. Robert Novak made mention of it in an article. A few Vultures from the New York Times began to feed on Novak’s article as if it were road_kill.

The first amendment to the constitution doesn’t give the media freedom to say anything they chose. In simple terms it say the government shall make no laws establishing a national religion, prohibiting free speech, of controlling the media. It doesn’t say the media can’t be held accountable. That prevision comes from a Liberal Court system.

President Bush could put an end to Gotcha Politics, [aka] The Politics of Personal Destruction. If the president were to pardon, Libby, Rove, and Delay. He could then go on national television, explain to the American People, Special Prosecutor investigations are costly, and never convict for the alleged crime only for misspoken testimony before the Grand Jury. Two prime cases are Bill Clinton and Martha Stewart. They were never convicted for their alleged crimes only for presumably false testimony before a Judge and the Grand Jury.

The Republicans are in the majority, they should start acting like it. It’s time to get rid of some of these archaic practices of the Congress. At times, I get the feeling Republicans haven’t come to terms with their being the Captain of the ship. They seem to be to willing to accept unwarranted compromise. When Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi get before the cameras they give the impression, they’re in charge. When Bill Frist and Denny Hastert get before the cameras they give the impression Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are in charge.

The kinder gentler approach Republicans are taking will only work when Democrats take a kinder gentler approach. They can’t fight Tigers with feathers.

Mr. President the country wants a strong leader. The country will support a strong leader. A leader willing to communicate with the people. Mr. President it’s time to get off the front porch and start mending fences.
