Oct. 30, 2005 OOPS! In my recent 100th message column, I said this: “We've only had one woman justice on the Supreme Court...”. Shortly after it was posted, this email came to my box:

Oh, the shame, the shame! What a silly, stupid, and blatantly obvious error! And not just a mere typo, either...I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that. We've had two women on the Court, my apologies... For no particular reason [because I need this correction to stretch to at least 500 words] here is a synopsis of a recent column by Keith. Emails are usually more personal, rough, less-for-public-consumption kinds of things, so I decided to summarize the email exchange his column “represents”. I find that I side with the liberal in the exchange – I don't know – something about his/her writing style – so this is a biased summary/interpretation: Lib: Nice writing, I agree with some – but, eh, we already have 50 or 60 conservatives that bash liberals at UK, why join them/are you one of them? Con: My life has been rough, I don't blame the world for my life but I do hate it [both my life and the world]. I'm not a conservative, even though I bash liberals and hold conservative views on most major issues. I hate to play the 'partisan' game and label my opinions – I learned this from Bill O'Reilly. Lib: Well, here is what's wrong with the conservative issues you've listed, some of them - you sure sound like a conservative – I readily admit I'm a liberal. Here specifically is what you don't understand about computer models, or the nature of a republic, etc. Con: *anger rising* Look, I'm not a conservative, only a stupid liberal would call me a conservative! And only a stupid liberal would be a liberal! Here is a mostly new set of conservative issues I [coincidentally] agree with, I won't mention the old set of issues you've debunked but I will call you wackos “socialists” anyway, you keep changing the subject! Please stick to the original subject that I keep writing about, but highly dislike, partisanship! Lib: Relax, dude. I can see where this is going, you've out-spoke me, I can't reply to your mountain in a reasonable amount of time, here are more reasons why your conservative views are lacking and why I think the evidence backs the liberal position, quit pretending you aren't conservative – I know how “partisanship” seems, but we are both partisans. Here is a breakdown and a selective response, if you give me specific points, I'll respond. Con: *anger rises yet more* You stupid pile of poop! How many times do I have to tell you I'm not a conservative even though I'm a conservative that hates liberals! How many times do I have to tell you that I don't blame the world for my wrecked life, even though I hate the world because my life is wrecked! How often do I have to ignore your points, and bring up 50 new ones?! How many times do I have to tell you that I don't care, even though I take a moderate to extreme amount of time responding with very lengthy emotional-laden bits? If you reply again, I'll ignore your reply – right to the spam folder! Lib: Ok, since you won't reply, I won't bother responding except to tell you that I won't respond. Cheers. Con: See how much I don't care? *Posts “edited” exchange on UK, wipes sweat from brow* Lib: *Scratches head, rolls eyes and cocks head sideways like the neighbors dog and squints with one eye* Is it really any wonder the country, or world for that matter, is headed in the direction that it is? ------------ About the author Frederick Smith: I enjoy writing about the positive virtues of humanism - humanists are the good guys. This is my second foray into the UK writing discordia. This time around, I want to be a tad more raw - maybe a bit edgier (does that sound "art-see"?)
