Oct. 30, 2005 It has been many long weeks since Beth Holloway-Twitty, the media-maven-loving mother of the vanished Natalee Holloway, the beautiful missing-from-Aruba Alabama honours student who, according to various websites, was awarded an eight-year, full-ride scholarship for a four-year premedicine degree at the University of Alabama, vowed to rest, recoup and return. http://www.useless-knowledge.com/1234/sept/article109.html To those who rely upon Beth’s on- (and off-) Aruba antics to leaven the ennui of their lives, Beth’s recent in-America performances will have left her audiences rapt and ensorcelled. The culmination of her two-month hiatus from Aruba surely must have been the time spent with National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice. Could disappearances and appearances have been topics of discussion while the two were riding in that chauffeured limousine? Was Condoleeza impressed enough with the HollowayMedia Inc. misinformation campaign, which has skillfully crafted much coverage from scant cloth, to ask Beth for guidance? Ms. Rice has her own vanishing to grieve over (those missing-from-Iraq Weapons of Mass Destruction) and, in her on-air appearances, the interviewers are seldom as mesmerized or deferential as the ones Beth is blessed with. Both, seemingly, have presidential ambitions: did one offer the other the Vice Presidency? Out of the public eye, the road for Beth has been much bumpier, with few chauffeured limousines and no coteries of secret servants to protect her and hers from the carping, cavilling common herd. Police Commissioner Dompig of Aruba has called into doubt the laughable legitimacy of the much-ballyhooed confession tapings; has trotted out the word ‘scam’ in two diverse-but-connected scenarios; has called for a review of the donation operations; and has issued unheeded calls for Beth to return to Aruba to assist with the investigation into the disappearance. The Mountain Brook participants will be interrogated again by law enforcement personnel and, to add Birmingham insult to Mountain Brook injury, it seems that the arriviste Twittys may not even be genuine Mountain Brook residents. With a 35243 ZIP (the City of Mountain Brook is 35223) Casa Twitty may be based in plebian Birmingham (unless they got around that minor matter by strapping a camper onto Matt's Toyota Tundra and sending someone off to spend one night a week in Mountain Brook’s high school parking lot). The myth of the eight-year, full-ride scholarship for a four-year premedicine degree at the University of Alabama is now debunked; deader than the proverbial dodo. The website of the University of Alabama http://www.uajeffco.org/body.cfm?id=56 reveals two scholarship types: a one-year National Heritage Scholarship that pays 10-per-cent of tuition costs only, and a $4,000 four-year Alumni scholarship paid out at $1,000 per year. Both are awarded only to children or grandchildren of active members of the Alumni Association and, if these are full-ride scholarships, they seem hardly enough to cover the cost of on-campus parking or a yearly bus pass. Perhaps someone should suggest that an editing of HollowayMedia Inc.’s misinformation-filled Natalee Holloway biography at Wikipedia.org is long overdue? Though I am not of the Catholic persuasion, this beatify-the-beautiful-Natalee campaign is making the Vatican’s Canonization Committee look like a group of rank amateurs. I pray that the Holy See ignores the whole Holloway affray: restrictive Vatican guidelines mandate that at least five years must pass before the beatification and canonical investigative processes can begin--and adhering to that time frame would severely handicap a quickie, donation operation that is driven purely by immediate profit and not by piety, purity, and the eternal salvation of humankind. There have been another two blows to the morale of the chattering keyboard monkeys who labour long hours to keep interest up and the donations rolling in. Administering a sharp rap to Southern parenting skills and the 30-odd adults who accompanied the Mountain Brook trip participants, Pennsylvania’s Brandywine Heights School District (which referenced the Aruban vanishing as a cautionary example) sent three teenage girls home after day-one of a weeklong trip to Spain when “they left their hotel room and had unauthorized guests in their room after curfew”. Alert, agog viewers in early June briefly got a glimpse of Natalee’s medications, but information as to the prescribed contents and the underlying conditions requiring on-vacation dosings has been carefully kept from the public domain, even though there are many prescription drugs that can cause extremely adverse reactions when combined with alcohol or recreational drugs. The Internet is abuzz with word that Natalee Holloway had worked at Harvest Glen Market, a division of the Birmingham-based non-profit group, Glenwood Inc (which itself recently raised $10-million in donations), which is a “vocational training facility for people with autism and similar conditions… Approximately 15 such people work at the market on a rotating basis”. http://www.bizjournals.com/birmingham/stories/2003/04/07/daily40.html I am positive that Natalee was not a trainee at the facility, and feel certain that this was just a paid part-time job; however, it is time for the family to lay at rest the rumours that abound about the nature of the daughter’s involvement with Harvest Glen, her underlying medical or psychiatric condition, the medications that she was required to take—and whether it was prudent to include a medicine-taking, “naïve” (the mother’s own word) young girl on a trip that seems to have been totally unsupervised. The family has chosen to remain unresponsive, deferring in the past to the need to maintain ‘Natalee’s privacy'. That excuse went out the window months ago: made a mockery of by the countless lip-licking, prime-time recitations covering group rape, undergarments, etc. Now is the time to come clean and dispel a few more myths. ------------ About the author: Dayo Gould is a frequent visitor to Aruba, and is a volunteer ESL teacher in a Christian school.
