Oct. 30, 2005 I started writing articles for UK because I responded to one by Robert Reyes. He thanked me for my positive interest and because of him, I began penning my own thoughts. This coincided with the time that Natalee Holloway disappeared, so it was only natural that I began putting in my two cents worth about the case. I was a big supporter of Beth Twitty, and for the most part, I remain so. I have met so many nice people along the way and a few critics who wish I would return to the underside of the log they believe I came from! But, alll in all, it has been a wonderful experience. Truth be told, none of us who write articles are all that great when it comes to making a mark on literary history. If we were, we wouldn't be writing in here. We are the karoake entertainers of columnists. The qualified editorialists are people like William Safire and Dave Barry. We are not getting paid for our work. Our only remuneration is from our readers who stroke our egos and tell us how much they have been blessed by our insights into the issues and stories that make up our daily lives. I like Meri Ulrich. She is passionate, articulate, knowledgeable and classy. I know that some of the writers in here have been overly critical of her because she has been giving us daily updates on the Holloway disappearance. There is nothing wrong with her doing so. It is a fascinating mystery and she knows more about it than most of us do. Some people, like Meri, write from their HEART; some others, who are constantly putting her down, write from their HATE. I hope, for the sake of all of us, and for Natalee Holloway, that she continues to keep us informed and ignores those who have no real ideas of their own except to gnaw at her like rats chewing desperately on anything they can to survive. I like Brooks Mick and his lighthearded approach to serious topics. I enjoy reading Timothy Stelly who has such a variety of arrows in his journalistic quiver. I admire Judy Ransook who keeps it simple, brief and consistent in her endeavor to become a better writer enriching us all. I think the world of Michael John McCrae, who is not only prolific, but passionate in what he believes. He makes me believe it, too. To Dayo Gould, I just have three sentences to say to him in his efforts to discredit me and my accomplishments: "Teen Scene with Pat Hurley!" (Emmy award, Best Children's Show, Los Angeles, 1982. Channel 11) "The Bozo Show!" (Emmy award, Best Children's show, Chicago, 1988. Channel 9) "The Pat Hurley Show!" (Emmy award, Best Locally produced show in Chicago, 1988. Channel 32) I would prefer, in a perfect world, that the writers in here be able to write what they want and let the readers DECIDE who they want to love or criticize, not the other writers. But, that is why we live in an imperfect world. I have never understood why some writers take shots at other writers just because they disagree with them. If you dispute what someone else is WRITING, then write a better article refuting their ideas...don't get personal. Let's respect the work of someone, instead of being mean-spirited and hateful and attacking their private lives. Well, it is time, as Ron Lewis suggested, for me to get back to chopping up more of my articles and SNORTING them! I find great pleasure in doing so. Not only do I get to be prolific in my writing, I get to enjoy the fruits of my labor in a unique way! Hey Ron, wanna PARTY? My best to all of you out there who write from your hearts. Keep it up. We need you. To the rest of you, I hope you can search your own souls and find something redeeming in them so that when you do do publish something in here, it is beneficial to us all and not just another attempt to look clever at the expense of someone else's efforts. ------------ About the author: Pat Hurley has won three Emmy awards for writing, hosting and producing television shows.
