Oct. 27, 2005 At this moment, American Senate is considering whether Roland Arnall is the right man to become American Ambassador in The Netherlands. They doubt it very much seen his notorious background as a businessman who doesn´t seem to care about his clients as long as he is able to earn as much money as he can. What does he do with the money? Among other things, spending millions of dollars to the Republicans. Let me be clear: we Dutch are not waiting for such a man! It´s not because I´m against President Bush´s policies in many fields I say this. It´s a general feeling many Dutch people have towards Roland Arnall. Also among politicians who are strong believers of the rightness of President Bush´s policies. Our Minister of Foreign Affairs already complained about the fact it has already been three months since the Dutch deal without an American ambassador. One can guess his thoughts underneath (why are things going so slowly and why did George Bush pick out this guy of whom he could have known his nomination would cause troubles?). It seems to be tradition that a newly arrived ambassador offers his ´letters of belief´ (sorry, don´t know the English equivalent, so translate it literally) to our Queen. In it, it´s stated he or she is a man with a clean reputation, fully capable to fulfil his or her duty. Hm, what will our Queen think when she´s confronted with Roland Arnall? A much more famous Dutch column writer than I´m came to the conclusion she would send Roland Arnall away, stating he wasn´t wished for this function. I think that´s a too optimistic thought. It would mean a big riot between the USA and The Netherlands. However, it´s a fact this relationship is going to get worse anyway as long as the circus before the Senate goes on and on. If President Bush were wise, he withdraws the nomination of Arnall and comes up with another candidate. I´m sure there must be enough other candidates/volunteers. Preferably someone who doesn´t belong to his inner circle. ------------ About the author Johan Peters: I'm a freelance journalist/editor from Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
