Oct. 27, 2005 In these days of 24 / 7 media coverage it seems the media is always looking for villains, someone to blame where no individual blame’s deserved. Few blame the residence living in the path of hurricanes for their not making preparations. They’re the one’s who chose to live there, they aren’t mandated by government to spend their lives and retirement years in the paths of hurricanes, that’s their personal choice, with choice comes personal responsibility. The President, Governor Bush, and FEMA all warned the residence in the hurricane path to prepare with 72 hours of food and water supplies. Don Imus on his morning radio show suggested that was ridiculous, many people don’t have the funds to go out and buy $ 400.00 worth of supplies at one time, Let’s do the math, $400.00 divided by 72 hours equals $ 5.55 per hour. I can’t imagine anyone other than Michael Moore eating five dollars worth of food per hour for 72 continues hours. Forget buying gas, if he’s eating 72, Double Cheese Happy Meals without stopping he’s not going anywhere anyway. The residences of Florida were warned in advance the hurricanes are coming, they live with them on an annual basis, they certainly are no surprise. The state’s littered with information and warnings how to cope with hurricanes. How can it be the fault of any one man when there are deaths and damage because of one of nature’s most severe elements? Governor Jeb Bush rather than allow the media to turn hurricane Wilma into another media inspired catastrophe, took personal responsibility for short falls in the system. He chose to make it a Florida issue rather than blaming the President or FEMA. [Way to go Governor.] The national media would lead us to believe only President’s and Governors bare any responsibility for anything they deem wrong in the system. Whatever form it comes in, perhaps they only blame Republicans. I just received an e-mail from a friend if Florida, according to my friend Wilma caused more damage than Andrew did in the Miami area. Purchases require cash since there’s no electrical power to process checks and credit cards. The few gas stations that are open have lines miles long waiting for what they can purchase. Several grocery stores’ plan to open today on a limited basis, they’ll also require cash. How keeps enough cash available to carry them for a week or more? Cash would seem to me to be one of the essentials of preparing for a hurricane. I’m sure the State of Florida has a long list of thing to do in peroration for hurricanes, I wonder how many people follow the suggestions? Perhaps instead of being out in the center of the hurricane grandstanding and filming reporters could provided sound information on what people should be doing to best cope with the weather. The peoples right to know includes public service announcements as well as who’s to blame. Donald Trump on a talk show this morning made a very good suggestion. The first amendment doesn’t give the media freedom from accountability, the courts gives them that right. Mr. Trump suggested congress pass new libel laws making the press more accountable to truth. As it stands now the press needs freedom to fabricate and speculate in order to feed that 800-pound Gorilla, twenty-four hour news. Like all previous hurricanes, Florida will survive in spite of media speculation. When the damage is assed and Florida gets back on it’s feet we’ll see the over speculation and fabrication of media coverage. The media will be off on their next crusade of destructive reporting. ------------ About the author: Ken Hughes joined the Republican Party at the age of three.
