Rosa Parks: She Sat And Started Civil Rights

By Kaycee Nilson
Oct. 26, 2005

This week, we lost one of the most influential women in the world. Mrs. Rosa Parks (1913 – 2005) sat down in the front of a Montgomery, Alabama public transportation bus and refused to give up her seat for a white man. Thus sparked the Civil Rights Movement in the south.

Because of her actions, she was arrested. Her feelings on the incident? “I had worked all week as a seamstress and was tired.” Her actions prompted the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. to go to Alabama from Georgia and continue his crusade for civil rights.

This week, upon hearing of the passing of Mrs. Parks, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sr. released this statement, “She sat so that others may stand.” Amen, Revered Jackson, Amen.

To me, Rosa Parks has been an idol. I have always wanted to be like her and to say to people that they are not going to push me down. For you see, even though Civil Rights are still being trampled on in the United States, they no longer are just the rights of the African Americans, they are the rights of the Native Americans, the rights of Women, the rights of the Poor, and the rights of those that are truly disabled.

I am happy that when she went to meet her Maker, Mrs. Parks was surrounded by her family and according to reports, she went peacefully. But I am saddened by the fact that she died the night of my birthday.

With the entire constant reporting of the World Series, I was stunned that the news stations here in Chicago did take the time to report this bit of “REAL NEWS” this week.

I am so saddened by her passing and stunned by the death of one of the most influential people of all time that I cannot write more words. Please forgive me.
