 By Hal von Luebbert Oct. 24, 2005 It seems it may be time to point out to foreign nationals who visit UK, folks like Peter van der Vliet, that our Ken Hughes is what we call in the vernacular a “loose cannon.” For instance, when it came to pass that I became the object of his “killing tongue, but quiet sword,” he accused me of being a vainglorious liar. That, incidentally, in response to an e-mail of mine offering him a compliment on something he had written (kind of makes you wonder, doesn’t it?). But Ken, Peter, is long on vitriol, short on facts, and often confused with his logic and math. He also is somewhat bias-impaired where the truth is concerned. For instance, and referring, I suppose, to the short biography following my UK essays and apparently intent on one-upmanship, he reported that he had joined the Army and Special Forces at sixteen. Not generally given to that sort of thing, I ignored the opportunity provided my by my adversary and his obvious canard even when he published here a version of his e-mail to me, one suitably sculptured to serve his defamatory purposes. As I did admittedly remark then, “a pissing fight with a skunk” is not my style and I preferred to remove myself from the fray. Now, however, and witness his characteristically unwise and ungentlemanly offense of Mr. van der Vliet, the Dutch people, and the nation of the Netherlands, it seems to me proper to do something that might move Mr. Hughes to curb his vicious tongue. Perhaps, even it he cannot manage control of his scurrilous and offensive literary tongue, he will henceforward be more careful with his facts. Especially those parts of history that are clear proof of his inveracity. I will therefore point out that if Ken is seventy-five years old, he was born in 1930 and would therefore, at sixteen, have entered the military in 1946. Inasmuch at the United States Army’s Special Forces were not formed until 1952, one can only wonder which “special forces,” he meant. Perhaps UK’s mean-spirited curmudgeon will digress from his customary verbal attacks on all and sundry less conservative than Attila the Hun to explain how he managed to enlist at sixteen in a military busily standing down after the war, in a branch of service not yet organized. That should make for both challenging writing and interesting reading. Our friends overseas have long since become familiar with Ken Hughes and his ilk. The Ugly American of Lederer and Burdicks fictional story all those years ago no longer limits his travels to Sarkhan. Thanks to the internet, he can not only insult the whole world all at once, should he choose, he does. More, being the Ugly American the semi-literate, “conservative” boor he invariably is, his cyber-audience will know ten times the history he does, a fact not only making him all the more ugly to them, but leaving him totally unable to distinguish between what was and what is. Like the great mass of his political ilk, Mr. Hughes cannot, simply will not, see the nation the world once viewed as the great bastion of freedom it once was as the ravening military-economic Tyrannosaurus Rex it has become. They have not faced him, as I, for instance, have. There is a reason for that, I think, a reason very much akin to that which I referred in my own autobiographical story. In “Letters to Aaron, the Hal Luebbert Story,” I noted that for “Americans” (while there are thirty-four other nations in the hemisphere, the ugly U.S. American alone has the hubris to arrogate to himself the designation) to accept the truth of my story, they would be morally obligated by the moral code they profess to do something. Much easier to simply recite the mantra “unbelievable.” “America” doesn’t do that. Like the populace and media who chose to look the other way while my family and me were tortured and ruined, people like Ken Hughes dare not see the truth of what their government and the military-industrial complex that controls it have made of their country. What we were once, we are still – no matter what we do. The result is the jingoist credo we profess, and the virtual reality we build for ourselves to live in. To consider that what a nation did to one of its own citizens (remind yourself, too, of all the innocent men in US prisons) it might also do to other nations and peoples is not possible. “’America’ doesn’t do that.” And no recitation of facts, however incontrovertible, will change that. But all "American" are not like Mr. Hughes. So, Peter, I offer my apology to people in the Netherlands, Aruba, Europe, and elsewhere for the intemperate remarks of persons like Mr. Hughes. I hope that you will perhaps remember us for what we once were, rather than what we have become. Ik verontschuldigen mik. ------------ About the author: Hal von Luebbert is a retired soldier, private detective, bodyguard, and - recently - high school teacher. In 1978, the US government in its IRS avatar destroyed his business and family.
