Oct. 20, 2005 There is a new show on television and it's called "Commander In Chief". It is about the first female President of the United States and I heard on my local news tonight that the show has a purpose other than to simply entertain. It was implied that the Hollywood people behind the show are pro Hillary Clinton and that the show is in preparation for her candidacy in 2008. It makes sense considering the Clinton connection to Hollywood. It's quite a good show and the female President (portrayed by Gena Davis) is ever-so brilliant and comes through like a champ when the EVIL Speaker of the House (who happens to be a Republican) does everything in his power to thwart her and her Presidency. I would normally appreciate such a blatant attempt at politicizing a television show and consider it sly and cunning and rather amusing if it weren't so transparent and if it weren't so below the belt. Probably the parties involved in producing the show will deny any connection to politics or Mrs. Clinton but even someone with absolutely no knowledge of American politics and Hollywood's liberal leaning agenda would be insane not to notice what is going on. Now I expect Hillary to run for President and although I am an Independent, I don't like dirty pool and stacked decks. I don't like Hillary either. I am a Rudy Giuliani/John McCain ticket supporter because they are both excellent leaders, heroes in their own right and diametrically opposed on certain social issues. These two men would make the most well balanced ticket I can think of even though it is very unlikely that it will ever happen in the real world. Giuliani's pro-choice position and John McCain's many disagreements with the current regime and the conservatives will never fly, but I can hope. Anyway, back to the point of this article. When is it time to tell Hollywood to stick to what they do best and not attempt to influence an entire country with their own particular brand of politics? When is it wrong for people in a position of such high visibility to try to influence how the American people might vote? What's wrong with this picture is that the decision would not be based on the merits of the candidate or lack thereof. It would be based on the ability to sway through fiction and good writing, clever direction and acting. How do those particular qualities qualify a person to run for the highest office in the land? Let Hillary or whoever else wants to run for the Presidency stand on their records, speak to the people and do their own leg work. Let them convince us based on their policies and their visions and not because we are being trained to believe that a certain candidate is qualified because a movie star ACTS qualified and is convincing in her ROLE. This is just some food for thought and not meant to sway anyone's political opinion. I actually enjoy the show and it IS well written and fun to watch. It is also FICTION and I am able to decipher between that and the real thing. How many people will do that? We are a nation of television watchers and we often take things rather seriously when they are not meant to be taken that way. I have used CSI as an example previously in my writings. They can solve a crime in an hour's time by using technical instruments that are pure science fiction rather than real science and they can do it with wonderful flash backs and visions of the actual crime. Ah, if we could only do that in real life. We can't. Nor can we elect a President based on a television show and how well it's written or acted. I am appalled that this is being done and afraid that many people will buy into the premise that's being put forth because it is well known in "the business" that most shows are geared toward an eighth grade mentality.
