Oct. 13, 2005 Some say the wrath of God was upon New Orleans but it is the Bourbon Street Strip Clubs, exotic dancers and sinners who are back in business before just about anything else. There are an abundance of male national guards, police, rescue workers who outnumber the women. Necessity is often the mother of invention If you research the history of the Old West it was the Soiled Doves and the Red Light Districts who were first on the scene. The respectable ladies came later. They married and henpecked the men. They opened churches and started temperance leagues to close down the red light districts. My Great Grandmother from Kentucy was a bootlegger. I really loved that woman. Her Mother, my great great granny picketed the White House when President Wilson was in office for women's rights to vote. They didn't have to burn their bras but they did get thrown in jail for it. There was hunger strikes, forced feedings and an outraged public at the treatment of these respectable women. Women got the right to vote and man has not been the same since. I follow the footsteps of my grandmothers. In the 70's I burned my bra at a NOW protest ralley. Nevertheless, I have to confess, I have far more in common with the soiled doves that I do the respectable women. I held jobs that would not go on my current day resume. I just wish I would have been working in New Orleans instead of Los Angeles. In the 1980's the Olympics came to Los Angeles. The government official wanted to convince the foreigners that Los Angeles was a virtuous city. They provided all of the Fifth and Main Street skid row bums tuxedos. The police did a sweep and busted all of the strip joints. The Clubs all closed down. The club owner where I dance said it was a terminal business and relocated to Las Vegas. Nevertheless I was out of a job and had a minor legal history. It wasn't so bad, I pleaded it down to Disturbing the Peace and was sentenced to fifty hours of community service. They sent me to my own church to do the service. The lady in charge asked me, "Dear, we know you don't drink so what was the nature of your crime." I had to admit to her that after confirmation class, I often went to my second job which consisted of taking it off for mankind. I served my debt to society, finished college, eventually married and went to work for Social Services. I read with amusement about how all the European Women were running around on Venice Beach topless. The police were giving them tickets. One woman from the Netherlands asked, "what's the big deal, this is normal in Europe. Americans are such Prudes." The Oriental men wanted to know where the Hoochy Kootchy Bars were. There are none to be found because Los Angeles is a virtuous city.
