Shallow Hal Revisited

By Judy Ramsook
Oct. 11, 2005

Sometimes when one tunes in to a talk radio programme, he/she is not certain what topic or subject matter is being discussed. But then comes a subject that make some wonder. For example, I recently heard of a case in which a young man told his fiancee that if she did not lose enough weight to fit into her wedding gown, he would not marry her.

Something which quickly took me back to a certain movie, the film? Shallow Hal. And in that movie, the character played by Jack Black was not exactly on the skinny side, but there he was, the character, Hal, expecting to nab the perfect beauty.

Something which will make one ponder, these persons who are placing such demands on their brides-to-be, are they exactly slim? And what do these types think is going to occur somewhere down the road of time when that same fiancee turned wife whom he wanted to lose all that weight say, becomes pregnant? Will those individuals voice an opinion then?

Wanting the perfect looking mate is one thing and good luck upon finding such an individual, for no one remains the same size forever. And if one is not ready to accept an individual for who he/she is, then it is time to move on and stop placing such demands on another. Demands that the one doing the criticising might not be able to cope with himself.
