Oct. 11, 2005 Frederick Smith makes it sound as if he thinks that white people, rather than black people, should be held responsible for black criminality, because whites have put blacks in a situation that apparently no one else on the planet has ever had to endure. Apparently, it makes no difference that an American black may have an annual income of $30,000, and an Egyptian one of $500, somehow or another the black is still in a worse situation than the Egyptian, because the black has been singled ou for discrimination, and at any rate I needn’t mention foreigners, to hear him tell it, because there is or has been poverty in the US. But I say there’s never been poverty in the US so acute that families were living on $500, figuring 2005 dollars, per year. I’ve visited 50 countries and seen dreadful poverty, in China, Perú, Central America, Brazil, Thailand, Egypt and elsewhere, but, if I am to believe Smith, my empathy should be for those $30,000-and-up black families with houses, cars, clothes in closets, food in pantries, maybe even cameras, computers and television sets, because, supposedly, they have to remain in the “slums” or “ghettoes”, and when a 14-year-old black youth from one of those “slums” kills somebody over an insult, I should blame white people for the discrimination that ended only 40 years ago. While acknowledging that he wouldn’t let his chilren run loose in Harlem or Watts, Smith qualifies this by saying he wouldn’t let them run loose in Madison, Wisconsin either. He is playing a sanctimonious little trick, trying to make it seem that these places all about coequal, though he doesn’t say that exactly. But this is just nonsense. Of course, anyone can walk around in a city like Madison, Fargo, Omaha or Des Moines, whether Smith would let his children do so or not. But that is not the case in Gary, Watts or Harlem, and I do know what I’m talking about. When I pointed out that blacks made up 8.4% of Seattle’s population, but only 0.5% of Vancouver’s, and that was the real reason for Seattle’s greater criminality, Smith got sarcastic, “Oh, why didn’t I see that?”, as if there were absolutely no correlation between blackness and criminality, when out of the 354 largest cities in the US, the 14 most criminal cities include the 10 blackest cities in the US, a phenomenon that defies 7 quadrillion to 1 odds. In fact, the Seattle-Vancouver example that Smith says Carl Sagan cited was actually cherry-picked, according to some researchers. For instance, Tijuana, which has stricter gun laws than San Diego, has 6 times the murder rate. So Sagan was being hypocritical, if that’s what he said. I’m just taking Smith’s word for it. It’s blacks rather than guns that explain Seattle. Smith’s contention is that blacks are what they are because of limitations or restrictions placed on them by white people, but that may not be true. They may be doing as well as they’re doing because of the opportunities offered them by whites. Without white assistance, American blacks might be like the blacks in Botswana or Zimbabwe. How many sub-Saharans will ever see $30,000 a year. It may be more tenable that whites are making blacks better than they would be if left to their own devices. Smith seems to suggest that Irishmen, Italians and Germans were the criminals of yesteryear, but because of the ease with thich they assimilate, they’re like the rest of us now, whereas blacks are still quarantined, which explains why they produce so many killers and robbers. First of all, I don’t believe this for one minute, though it would be difficult to produce statistics on Italian American criminality in 1910. What lies behind this is a stubborn refusal by Smith to admit that ethnic and racial differences do exist. Of course they do. There are differences in physique, IQ and predisposition to certain types of behavior. It is this very ethnicity of traits that makes me accept the official version of 9/11, because I do believe that the ability to undertake suicide missions is a primarily Arab trait. Some people hypothesize that Jews did it, but I don’t see Jews as suicide bombers, so much as I see them as manipulators. Blacks show a proclivity for street violence, probably due to their athletic nature and limited intelligence. Pointing out individuals like Tiger Wood, as Smith does, means nothing. We all know, of course, that there are borderline cases and exceptions. I am talking about generalities. Smith calls it a cheap shot that I allude to his “validation” of the Big Bang or his espousal of the asteroid spaceship project. I was only citing these to demonstrate that Smith has a penchant for being overly emphatic on debatable issues.
