Oct. 11, 2005 It has become obvious that Osama bin Laden has outsmarted George W. Bush. This is not an impressive achievement; Moe, Shemp, and Larry could probably make a monkey out of him too. But geopolitical conflict is no laughing matter. Let's examine how Osama has put Bush (and accordingly, the U.S.) in checkmate. When Osama bin Laden planned his devastating terrorist attack on the U.S., he had to have known there would be a reaction. Aware of America's lust for oil and George W. Bush's personal grudge against Saddam Hussein (owing to the assassination attempt on his father), Osama guessed correctly that George W. Bush would choose to invade Iraq. The guess was uncannily accurate because President Bush and his corporate oil-owned administration almost decided to invade Iraq first and really wanted to, but the evidence that Osama was responsible for the attack was overwhelming, and they couldn't come up with a lie that would cover this decision. Donald Rumsfeld even said, "there are no good targets in Afghanistan." This statement reveals the reluctance of the oil puppets to go after the real enemies of the American people and perhaps explains their half-hearted attempts to get Osama. Osama was willing to sacrifice his life for his cause, but he must have known there was a high probability of escape in rough, roadless terrain. He knew American soldiers--dependent on gas guzzling army vehicles--would not relish the long hikes in mountains that it would take to capture him, and he was right. He must have been pleasantly surprised when U.S. military strategists left the back door wide open for him to escape by trusting locals sympathetic to his cause. Overall, the effort put forth to get him is pathetic, and one wonders if Bush isn't keeping him alive as an excuse to scare us into rallying around the flag every once in awhile when his poll numbers slip. The U.S. did commit enough troops, however, to install an oil puppet ruler in the capitol of Afghanistan so they now can run an oil pipeline through the country. We can get the oil flowing: Who cares if a mass murderer plotting our destruction is at large? Sadly, this is the attitude of the people who really run this country. So the U.S. invaded Iraq, just as Osama planned it. The U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq has resulted in anarchy--a fertile ground for Islamic fundamentalism. Whether U.S. troops stay or leave, there will be anarchy in Iraq. Osama surmised that the U.S. public would lose patience with a decade long guerrilla war and demand withdrawal, thus his followers could also claim victory even though it is home grown rebels with no connection to him who do most of the dirty work. Plus, the volunteer military is strained to the breaking point and is unlikely--for a long time--to go after new threats and challenges. Terrorists will set up operations elsewhere, and Americans will say, "we can't send troops there. Remember what happened in Iraq." Unwittingly, when he removed Saddam from power, President Bush eliminated the one obstacle to the Islamic empire Osama desired--the kind that can be forged out of anarchy and feudalistic warlords. Osama used our president like a pawn to set up a situation he wanted. President Bush committed a blunder of colossal proportions, and this decision will cost Americans in lives, money, reduced security, and lessened prestige. Americans deserve better than the corrupt incompetent leadership we have now. There isn't anything we can do about our defeat at the hands of Osama bin Laden, but we can wake up and protest against the corporate fascism that now controls this country. Wear t-shirts like I do that say, "George W. Bush Poisons America." Vote for Green Party candidates if the democratic candidates sound too much like republicans. Boycott Wal-Mart. Write letters to congressmen and tell them what you think of their subservience to big oil. Wake up, America.
