Oct. 9, 2005 Racial issues have dominated the conversation here at Useless Knowledge recently. We’ve talked about the impact of prejudice and racism at the exclusion of some other issues that face us. Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers had to fight prejudice of her own throughout her career, in the form of sexism, to potentially join a body which only two women have ever graced. Even in the era of Affirmative Action, women still face challenges in terms of compensation and advancement in the workplace. It’d be great to hear from some of our regular correspondents, like Michelle Malsbury, Kaycee Nilson, and Sher Zieve, about some of the things that they’ve seen on the job and how that’s impacted their world view. Older employees who lose their jobs to downsizing and outsourcing have a tougher time finding work, and may find themselves reporting to someone with less experience and knowledge when they do land a new job. In Hollywood, many actors know that juicier roles become fewer and farther between as they age. Has anyone here faced discrimination because of age, and if so, how did you overcome it? The late US Senator John East, actress Geri Jewell, and singer Mel Tillis all had some sort of physical or mental impediment that impacted their careers. They overcame their afflictions to go on to success, but many people with handicaps face a different kind of prejudice. I don’t know any of our regulars who have faced this, but if there are any, what has that experience been like for you? What obstacles and prejudices have you had to deal with? As great as America is, it still has issues to deal with. Race is just one of them. ------------ About the author: Claxton Graham has written a number of articles for Useless Knowledge.
