Name Spelling Has Its Ups And Downs Too

By Judy Ramsook

If you happen to have a name that is not widely or commonly used, sometimes some people will still tend to misspell it, and sometimes again, the most commonly used name can also have its ups and downs in the spelling world.

Take my first name for example, sometimes some people whom you have been newly introduced to will hear something else like Julie or Julia which may leave one to wonder there is no letter L in my name, how did they hear that.

Or if you happen to be speaking with some one on the telephone, you might recall the time(s) when you have had to say each letter of your name with a clear example of that letter. Like if the first letter of your name begins with the letter L you might first utter the letter L followed by L as in Larry or Louise and so on, just to make sure the person on the other end spells your name right.

Anyway, with modern times also come name variations and some parents who want to be a little creative might make up some names of their own for their kids. Then annoyance sets in when you receive that piece of mail, yes with the misspelled version of your name.

You know, like maybe a certain letter is in the wrong place or it could have even ended up at the end of the misspelled last name, leaving you to utter in frustration, some people will never get the spelling of your name right. Then just when you thought it was only strangers or persons you have been recently introduced to who misspell your name, think again.

This may come as a surprise to some of you, but some relatives whom you have known practically all your life can misspell it too, and you notice this slight error when you are reading that all important greeting card or the name on a gift tag. And you thought people knew you well enough to at least spell your name right.

Granted, people make mistakes when they are in a hurry, but it won’t hurt to double check the spelling of a loved one’s name if you are not certain. The recepient of that card, letter or gift will appreciate it. As for typos, that’s another matter.
