Oct. 6, 2005 Yeah, we are adults here and the children are getting excited because Halloween is approaching quickly. As we know this day to be, it is a day that the children dress up and go into the night to gather candy treats. The real legend would have the tale told differently. If we only knew what the night brings we wouldn’t let the kiddies go out at all. Long ago, in a different time then we know, there was an evil that lurked in the night. We had no lights to keep the streets visible; we had no police to keep us safe. On the day, October, 31, those many years ago the creatures ruled the night. Only one night out of the year these menaces would be let out to do as they pleased. There master kept these deformed monsters in his lair, kept in cages and fed only morsels keeping them so hungry. Then on the night of the 31st they would go on a eating frenzy all throughout the night. All shapes and sizes, hideous to look at and if you happened to look them right in there eyes you would go blind then sweat then your heart would burst from fright. They hide blending into the landscape like chameleons waiting to pounce on there prey, leaving nothing but there bones, reminding us that they still exist. Oh the townsfolk knew to lock there doors and stay inside on this evil night but as always some ignored this rule and never were seen again. Neither man nor beast this evil was lurking in the shadows. This is the worst thing you know, not knowing what you are up against. This is what scares people most, the unknown. The town’s people tried many things and with torches, candles and oil lanterns lighting up the outside of there homes these beasts could not do what they set out to do. There master would not be outsmarted so he sent out decoys in masks and costumes so his monsters could blend in and then feed on there victims without detection. This was a simpler time perhaps. We are old enough not to believe in such tales. So this Halloween when you send your child out to gather there treats, make sure you are not playing into the masters hands. Make damn sure you are not being used to help these demons blend in to gather there prey. You see, the children know what lurks among us. We forgot more and more as we grew older. The children know about monsters in there closet or under there beds. We laugh and call them silly but they know what is real. The naive will be used for there innocents. Halloween approaches us now and we must learn from the children. What makes them decide what they must dress up as? Is it the master talking to them in there sleep? Just use caution and please beware and oh yeah, HAPPY HALLOWEEN. ------------ About the author: Bob D Caterino is a writer that we all either hate or love.
