Iraq, Harriet Miers, And Other Observations

By Craig Chamberlain
Oct. 5, 2005

Iraq seems to be the problem on everyones mind, but one that no one can solve. The "peace activists" want to cut and run. Hmmm.... let me think about that. It would spread violence throughout the region as jihadists took aim at every government in the region. Our withdrawl would embolden them more than it did when we left somalia. The only way to deal with the jihad is to kill its fighters. Reason and diplomacy are ineffective against them as they don't have minds to reason with. That can probably go for the peace activists as well. But something needs to be done in Iraq. So I have a humble suggestion. Let's call it a baptism by fire. Perhaps baptism is the wrong word when talking about a country of muslims but I think you will see my point.

The criticism is that the Iraqi army is incapable of fighting and just runs off unless we're there to back them up. Yet, curiously, I have not heard this criticism of the Afghan Army, which by all accounts fights just well. Perhaps there is some cultural difference between arabs and afghans or perhaps it means that since there aren't as many troops in Afghanistan as there are in Iraq they have to do some of the fighting. I think we teach the Iraqi army to fight, the same way some kids get taught to swim. We just throw them right in. At the next battle tell the Iraqis that it is there country, and the jihadists are trying to destory it. Tell them it is time to fight for it and they can't always rely on us. We have trained them as well as they can be trained the rest is up to them.

The choice of Harriet Miers to the supreme court is one that is causing a problem, just as most people predicted. What wasn't predicted is that the problem is on the right. Harry Reid encouraged Bush to select Miers. That right there should be setting off alarm bells. When the leader of the opposition wants someone on the court you know they don't belong there. Let's get one thing straight. The GOP has the majority, and Bush got reelected. That means that the republicans get to put their people on the court and Harry Reid can't do anything about it.

But for whatever reason, not wanting a fight in the senate or desire to put a Bush loyalist on the court, Bush picked her. Because he knows her we are supposed to trust him. That's all well and good, she might be a fine attorney, but does that mean she belongs on the Supreme Court? Bush might be right, and she might be an inspired choice but I'm not holding my breath. I think we just got ourselves another O'Connor or Souter.

Dick Morris has a new book Cond vs. Hillary. It's about the '08 presidential elections. Do we have to think about that now. Can't we wait until '07 to talk about it. I don't think I have the energy to think about what's going to happen in three years.

Onto something else. Red Sox lose, Yankees win. Sounds like all is well in the baseball world again. Here's to hoping that the yankees get another world series. If the Mountaineers had beaten Virginia Tech all would be perfect in the world of sports.
