I Stop Short Of Calling William Bennett A Racist

By Claxton Graham
Oct. 2, 2005

1) William Bennett meant what he said and he said what he meant. That makes him an idiot, one hundred percent. And for the record, it would have been equally appalling if he had suggested, hypothetically of course, that racism would start to disappear if white babies were aborted.

Whenever someone says something like what Bennett said—that crime could be reduced by aborting black babies—it tells me he’s given the idea some thought. The fact that he even had to qualify the idea as reprehensible also tells me that he’s reprehensible for having the thought.

Liberals ought not be alone in jumping in Bennett’s sandbox on this one. Conservatives who have actually done some work to build bridges between blacks and whites need to hold Bennett accountable, because his words have undone a lot of good work.

I stop short of calling William Bennett a racist, but there’s no doubt in my mind he’s an idiot.

2) Congratulations are in order for John Roberts, the 17th Chief Justice of the United States. He survived the confirmation hearings and is now ready to preside over a Supreme Court that has, in recent years, rendered rulings that have excited and enraged liberals and conservatives alike. The 78-22 vote in the Senate shows that not only did Republicans support President Bush’s pick, some Democrats have faith that he will do right by the post, as well.

I don’t know much about Mr. Chief Justice Roberts, but I do know this: Barring illness or accident, his will be one of the longest tenures in Supreme Court history, possibly challenging the record thirty-six year stint of the late Associate Justice William O. Douglas. That means his Court will be shaping the laws of the land until I am ready for retirement. I wish you well, Mr. Chief Justice, as you begin your tenure.

3) Congratulations are also in order for Erskine Bowles, former chief of staff under President Clinton, who will become the new president of the University of North Carolina system on January 1. Bowles will replace Molly Corbett Broad, who has held the post since 1997.

Despite the fact that Bowles lost twice in his bid for a US Senate seat, he received support from Republicans in the state senate and on the search committee. Former system president C.D. Spangler also expressed delight and support of the search committee’s recommendation.

The University of North Carolina system is comprised of sixteen schools, including the flagship campus at Chapel Hill and NC State, the system’s most populous school, in Raleigh. Five historically-black universities are also part of the system.

4) Actress Holly Robinson Peete, a featured player on such series as “21 Jump Street”, and “For Your Love”, should know a little something about football, being married to longtime pro quarterback Rodney Peete. Rodale Press recently released Mrs. Peete’s primer “Get Your Own Damn Beer, I’m Watching The Game! A Woman’s Guide to Loving Pro Football”, which features a foreword by Pro Football Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, an epilogue by Hall of Famer Marcus Allen, and is co-authored by Daniel Paisner, whose other books include collaborations with former New York mayor Ed Koch, talk show host Montel Williams and poker champion Chris Moneymaker.

As might be expected, the book is geared toward women who don’t like or understand football. Peete’s goal in all this is to help women gain an appreciation of the game, so that they can enjoy it with their significant others instead of just enduring it. I’ll have a full review on this book after I’ve read it. Stay tuned.

5) Speaking of reviews, I’ll also have a review soon on “We ♥ Katamari”, the sequel to last year’s surprise blockbuster hit, “Katamari Damacy”. Here’s a little tease for you, though: It’s better than good.

6) What do hurricanes Andrew, Camille, Hazel, Hugo, Katrina and Rita all have in common? They all occurred during Republican presidencies. Republicans were also at the helm during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

Lest the elephants get their dander too far up, Democratic leadership was in place during some other natural disasters. Those would include hurricanes Beulah, Floyd, Fran and two tropical systems that caused extensive inland flooding in North Carolina in 1916. The 1886 Charleston earthquake, the 1964 Good Friday earthquake and the 1994 Northridge earthquake also happened with Democrats on watch.

Just in case anyone may be wondering, disco spanned across two Republican presidents and one Democrat.
