Oct. 1, 2005 This week following a trail of red herrings leading to numerous mistaken wiretaps traced by the FBI for anti-terrorist activities it was noted that there had been some 1,754 wiretaps requested and permitted in 2004. Were they legit? No telling how many were the right ones and how many others went undetected for eons before someone decided it was not what they wanted and moved on to the next number. The FBI will not give us the exact numbers of how many were mistaken and how many were legit. However, the FBI admitted that it is more difficult to tap today with the digital age than it was back in the days of analog. (www.aol.news.com, September 30, 2005) A short 45 days post 9/11 and the President and Congress set the Patriot Act into motion allowing all sorts of unprecedented legal hanky panky to become secretive and the norm. Of course, this entire act was based loosely on fear that another 9/11 was eminent and that this type of secretive legislation would make us safer. Yea, right! Previously, law enforcement agencies had to tell the people that they were investigating that they were being investigated prior to embarking on that investigation. That is no longer the case. The FBI and all other law enforcement agencies now have gross latitude to search and seize as well as tap cell phones, regular phones, and the internet, for whomever they deem a potential threat to national security. This breech could be used to incarcerate anyone for an indeterminate time without legal counsel or even a phone call to friends and family. Case in point, Gitmo. Just how many detainees do we have there and how long have they bee left without any rights or privileges? That person could be you or me and we might never know that we were in fact being investigated until it was too late! This October Congress is supposed to decide how and if we should continue to use or expand the Patriot Act. I say cancel the Patriot Act all together and let us all get back to the rights, freedoms, and privileges that the US Constitution and Bill of Rights afforded us! Quit the frivolous and mistaken wiretaps, searches and seizures! Please call or write your local congressman/woman or local senator and let your voice be heard. Just say NO to the Patriot Act!
