Nov. 30, 2005 Katie Holmes has been in the news much lately because of her romance with the fading movie superstar, Tom Cruise. Few people, however, are giving much lip service to her father, the late John Holmes. He was, intermittently, a really big star. He had a long career in films. Times were hard in the 70s, as it was the era of leisure suits and bland disco music and movies that didn’t stick in one’s mind. He filled the gap well, however. He stood astride the world of low-budget films, a giant of a man. Many young starlets knelt at his feet, begging for parts. Long before Texas Hold-em tournaments became popular, he was known as a fine poker player, making many a big score. But there were times his luck ran out. He could blow a big wad of cash in a short time. But he was an honest fellow, known for paying off his debts even when he was going down on his luck. His friends considered him a real stand-up guy. Some say the old Jimmy Dean song, “Big John,” was written with him in mind. Toward the end, however, suitable parts were scarce, coming in dribs and drabs, and eventually his movie career just petered out. ------------ About the author Brooks A.
