Nov. 30, 2005 In March I set as a goal to pen 200 columns before December 20, 2005. That date would mark my 1-year anniversary as a Useless Knowledge contributor. I accomplished that goal today. Thank you Mr. Editor for allowing me to voice my opinion, and thanks to those of you who have agreed, rebutted and/or sent e-mails—nice or nasty. The year at UK has also allowed me to study arguments by liberal and conservatives alike; and it has allowed me to re-think my dyed-in-the-wool Democratic viewpoints and move toward the middle. Come December 20 (my one-year anniversary at UK) it will be time for a six-week hiatus. I’ll read a few books by Stephen King and some of the published works of my fellow UK authors. Oh, I will continue to read the missives published here, particularly those of my friend Claxton Graham, who has inspired me to write in the sci-fi genre (one novel, one novella). I’ll read everyone else as well so that I stay abreast of world events and have a few laughs along the way. By the time I return I’m sure Cindy, Beth, Deepak, Iraq, Bill O’Reilly, Scooter Libby and G-Dub (our President) will still be in the news. At UK, Politics and religion will continue to fuel the fires of discord. While tempers flare, I’ll be fishing Hogback or Beaver slough on the California Delta, or chillin’ in my wingback desk chair, watching “My Name Is Earl” and “The Simpsons.” I’ll spend more than a few evenings sipping Hennessey and listening to the rain tap-dance on my livingroom window while the latest Rhian Benson, Herbie Hancock or Boney James CD plays softly in the background. I’ll take time to shop several of my novels and screenplays. Currently I have three books making the rounds. One such tome is an urban coming of age tale titled, “Darker Than Blue.” The story is based loosely on my years at Pacifica High School, a racially-diverse, but divided campus. Another book I’ve shopped is titled, “Thick As Thieves/Like A Sucka”, a combination of two guns and gangstas novellas. My final submission is “Sounds of the Shadows”, something of a response to Terri McMillan’s “Waiting To Exhale.” It is the story of five men with “women problems” who go on a four-day camping trip to booze, break bread and hopefully bond. Instead the trip turns into criticism and competition. For one of the men, a second chance at love is the spoils. Alas, it will be several weeks before I hear from any of the possible publishers. I will also assist my church in organizing its Black history month program (where I am expected to speak). I’ve planned my return for February 1, 2006. By that time I will have broken at least three of my New Years’ resolutions, NBC will have cancelled ¾ of its Fall schedule, my granddaughter Azaria Rachelle will be ready to celebrate her third birthday and the Atlanta Hawks should be mathematically eliminated from the NBA playoff picture. My batteries will be recharged and the creative juices will once again be at peak flow. Right now I’m at 200 articles and counting. By this time next year I hope to break the 300 columns barrier. Tape 6 of 10 Just joking, folks. See ya February 1st—y’all be cool. ------------ About the author: Timothy Stelly is a 46-year old California native with a wide variety of interests-from fishing to politics, which have a lot in common: Both require you to deal with worms and most of your time is spent idling. He is a former Democrat, believing that Party represents outdated ideas. He is officially registered as an Independent, choosing to keep his options open. Timothy is also the author of more than 80 screenplays and novels, two of which have been "published": "Tempest In The Stone" and "The Malice Of Cain", both available through PublishAmerica. He defines his writing style as "Hip-hop fiction; a cross between Richard Pryor and Richard Wright." His UK columns is written in a hard-edged style, but he is not yet a curmudgeon or a conservative. (Is that redundant?) After all, one of his favorite movies is "The Adventures of Milo and Otis." stellbread0.tripod.com Email: stellbread@yahoo.com Tell a friend about this site! ------------ All articles are EXCLUSIVE to Useless-Knowledge.com and are not allowed to be posted on other websites.
