Nov. 29, 2005 What is the most reliable indication that the war in Iraq is going well and that the George Bush strategy for the war on terror is correct? I’ll tell you! It is that Democrats are becoming ever more desperate to surrender! They don’t want Bush to succeed, even though that success would also be America’s. They are thus frantic to surrender before the success becomes obvious to the majority of American populace. http://www.theconservativevoice.com/articles/article.html?id=10180 This is also much like the contrarian view of the stock market. The more people become gloomy and sell stocks, the greater the reason to buy stocks, as a bull market is coming. And the more bullish the market analysts aer, the greater the reason to sell stocks, as a bear market is on the way. In a similar vein, what is the best evidence that oil reserves are not on the verge of running out? Some evidence is: 1) Oil fields previously depleted have replenished themselves from somewhere. 2) Oil has been discovered twice as deep as previously thought possible, well below any organic matter from the age of dinosaurs. 3) De novo methane production independent of petroleum or organic matter has been discovered. 4) The volume of oil already pumped is higher than some theoretical estimates of oil quantities if oil came from rotting vegetation and dinosaurs. 5) Current estimates of oil reserves are the highest in history. That is, we know of more oil available now than estimates from 100 years ago or 50 years ago or 10 years ago. But what is the BEST indicator that oil reserves are plentiful? It is that doomsday predictions are plentiful. And we know from experience that these doomsday predictions don’t come true! Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” never came. Paul Ehrlich’s “Population Bomb” never exploded—in fact, populations in many countries are not being sustained by birth rates. And on and on. Predictions of mass starvations have not proved out. Predictions of nuclear winter have not panned out. I fully expect that predictions of the oil supply’s running out will not pan out either. And that’s the best reason to disbelieve the global warming scenarios, too. The more gloomy the doomsday prediction, the less likely it is! Mick’s First Contrarian Law of Doomsaying: The more desperate the doomsayers are to climb on the Doomsday Bandwagon, the greater the probability that the bandwagon will collapse and go nowhere. ------------ About the author Brooks A.
