How Important Is Christmas?

By Skip Toomaloo

You’ve heard all the arguments about the paganism that began what we call the Christmas Holiday. You’ve heard all the debate about the actual time and date of the birth of Jesus. You have seen all the atheistic and religionist hand-wringing over the truth or fiction of the biblical history. You’ve suffered through the various diatribes of unbelievers and those who’ve become generally disgusted with the hassles of the holidays. You’ve joined the club.

None of those debates mean anything. There is no need to be concerned with anything anyone has to say in the matter of the birth of the Son of God. It doesn’t matter when it happened. It happened and all the unbelievers need to get over it and realize their unbelief doesn’t affect the fact that there are a lot of believers who really don’t care whether they believe or not; as long as they stop trying to impose their unbelief on us.

Accusations are not important. What is important is eternal life. We who have faith in God and in the testimony of scripture have that eternal life. We’d sure like to see everyone else in a position in the heavens; but, that is a decision individually rendered. We understand that too.

I think we can all agree that Christmas has been commercialized to the extent that it really has no spiritual bearing anymore. Oh, there are Christians who still take the meaning of the birth and ensure their children understand that Christmas is not trees, lights, Santa and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Yet, there are too many religionists who have forgotten the roots of the historical Jesus and have played into the commercialism and the greed of the holiday season. Merchants would fall over cold if the atheists were to claim a victory in eliminating the “X-mas” as in (X-box) holiday.

This time of the year has become important for mainly one thing; the holiday vacation. Schools let out. Many businesses not directly involved in retail sales cut hours and give extended weekends. All stores offer huge discounts on an array of merchandise and every stripe of human gets the benefit; believer or unbeliever. When corporations give out their Christmas bonus; HEY; everyone gets it whether they celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanza or whatever.

The very last thing on anyone’s mind is the reason God sent his Son into the world.

All the gyrations of the PC and unbelieving segments of society to change the name of Christmas; eliminate trees, manger scenes, and anything else remotely religious is an exercise in atheistic futility. Not one word of any of that can possibly eliminate God.

You can boycott “Target” because the Salvation Army stands out front daring to wish people; regardless of race, creed, color, or sexual orientation “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays” and look like a “grinch”.

Or you can go your own merry way; accepting your “Christmas” bonus in good grace. You are even welcome to rename your “Christmas” bonus, your “Holiday” bonus. Rename your parties, your school programs and your store sales. It is appropriate to withdraw the name of “Christ” from all that glaring commercialism. I don’t believe the Lord cares for any of it.

It is a strange attitude that desires the destruction of something that brings joy to millions of people worldwide. It is a strange attitude that wishes to take a celebration that has such an impact on children for the good and turn it into something that is purported to be evil. It is a strange attitude that would take a holiday pointed at giving love, hope and help to others and say this isn’t to be done because the God of the Christian is a fantasy. But as strange as such attitudes are; they are understandable.

So, how important is Christmas?

Christmas is as important as you personally make it. These are individual decisions. The unbeliever makes up his mind that Christ means nothing. The believer makes up his mind that Christ means everything. The retailer makes up his mind that Christ means money. The religionist makes up his mind that Christ means staying home and watching football; drinking beer; and eating a big meal; and maybe going to church his one of two times a year.

Does any of that matter?

We who know God know that Jesus was sent into the world to die for the sins of the world. It doesn’t matter which month of the year that was; it happened. The most important aspect of the story of the Lord’s birth was that Mary wrapped him in “swaddling” clothes. “Swaddling” clothes are grave clothes. You just don’t get too much more prophetic than that. Jesus was born to die. He did that and three days later he fulfilled his promise to his followers that he would rise again from his grave as a sign that God’s law was complete.

That’s good enough for me.

Merry Christmas!
